The SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab and Dept. of CSE in association with the Research and Facilities Group organized Three-day Skill Development Program (SDP) on Scientific Paper Writing and Publishing during 21-23 September 2023.
The three-day SDP was inaugurated on 21/09/2023 at 9:30 am. Dr Harivinod N, Convener, welcomed the gathering. Dr Manohara M M Pai, Senior Professor, MIT Manipal was the chief guest. He highlighted the importance of innovation and research. Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal is the guest of honour. Fr Kenneth Rayner Crasta, Assistant Director gave the presidential remarks. Dr Sharun M, Co-Convenor, presented the vote of thanks.
A total of 45 participants from different parts of Kaataka participated in the SDP and attended the sessions.
Day 1: 21/09/2023, 10:00 am-5:00 pm - Scientific Paper Writing, Literature Survey, Methods, Results, Discussion
Resource Persons: Dr Manohara MM Pai, MIT Manipal, Dr Radhika M Pai, MIT Manipal.
During the moing session, Dr Manohara M M Pai is spoke about the various key aspects related to research, including the discovery of ignorance, innovation, and commercial values. The session was very effective were the participants clearly understood the different processes under research. The session summarized the following: world view, resource approach, literature Survey, research paper writing, selection criteria for research etc.
Post lunch session was handled by Dr Radhika Pai. She explained the structure of research paper and different phases of research. Conceptual framework development and literature review was clearly delivered. After a Tea break session was continued with complete guide for writing a scientific paper. The session concluded with a question and answer session and a note of thanks to the resource person.
Day 2: 22/09/2023, Session 1, 9:30 am -11:00 am - Mendeley - Reference Management Software
Resource Person: Dr Venkatesh Babu K P, Dept of Mathematics, SJEC.
Dr Venkatesh explained how to create an account in Mendeley, and using of sciencedirect website to fetch the metadata. Extraction of information from the Mendeley software and the steps to add author, paper, joual for the software were explained. The participants could able to handle their account in Mendeley by adding citation's.
Day 2: 22/09/2023, Session 2, 11.30 am-1:00 pm - Joual Finder Tools
Resource Person: Dr. Felcy D' Souza Librarian, SJEC
Dr Felcy S Souza explained the importance of publication. There are different criteria for selecting a right Joual and tools, she explained how to use scopus and open-source database for joual finder. Impact factor verification and IRINS creation was also delivered for the participants.
Day 2: 22/09/2023, Session 3, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Article Writing using Latex
Resource Person: Dr Harivinod N and Dr Shrisha H S, Dept of CSE, SJEC
Dr Harivinod N spoke about the structure of LATEX doxument and demonstrated a simple document as an example. The session was interactive and the participants leat about LATEX editing using overleaf tool. Dr Shrisha, he took an example of article and participants could able to edit the paper using latex.

Dr Shreeranga Bhat started the talk by defining research as a systematic investigation or inquiry aimed at discovering new knowledge, solving problems, or expanding existing knowledge. He highlighted on what is research. method vs methodology, research frameworks and types research methods

Resource Person: Dr Venkatesh Babu K P, Dept of Mathematics, SJEC.
The session started with plotting the graph, further continued by statistical analysis and digitizer. Participants explored about graphs and they could able to handle customization with their graph.
Day 3: 23/09/2023, Session 3, 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm - IPR - Patents
Resource Person: Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal, Dean R&D, SJEC
The session was a comprehensive event that delved into several critical topics, including types of innovation, strategies for implementation, copyright enforcement, and the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) procedure for obtaining patents. This search report will focus specifically on the discussion regarding "Prior Art" and its significance in the context of patents and intellectual property.
Day 3: 23/09/2023, Session 4, 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm- IPR - Copyright & Industrial Designs
Resource Person: Dr Vijay V. S. Dept. of ME, SJEC
The session focused on the meaning of copyright, authorship and ownership, and the adaptation and translation of copyrighted works. The session concluded with a Q and A session and a note of thanks to the resource person.
Dept. of CSE, Central Library and Research & Facilities Group in association with VTU consortium organized a Workshop on DrillBit - Plagiarism Detection Tool on 04/09/2023, 3:00pm-4:30pm at Prerana Hall. Mr R Sunil Kumar, Product Head, Balani Infotech Pvt Ltd. was the resource person. Around 27 faculty from various departments of SJEC participated in the event. Dr Harivinod N, Asso and Dr Felcy D' Souza.
Mr R Sunil Kumar explained the need of the plagiarism tool in academics. He also demonstrated how to generate the plagiarism report of Assignment/Article using DrillBit. He also showed various parameters that can be modified during the generation of report. The session was more interactive and the resource person clarified the doubts on usage DrillBit.
Dr Purushotham Chippar, Dean R&D florally welcomed the resource person. Dr Felcy D Souza facilitated the resource person with Momento. Dr Harivinod N executed vote of thanks. Dr Saumya Y M and Ms Supreetha D R emceed the session.
SESSION 1(11:00AM - 1:00PM)- The event commenced at 11:00 AM with the prayer and 3rd year CSE student Mr. Prem Iniyan welcomed the resource person Mr. Manjunath Chandrashekar-Senior Academic Alliance Manager in Celonis and introduced him to the students(CSE) registered for the session. Mr. Majunath Chandrashekar began the session by giving a brief introduction to Celonis and explained what is Process Mining. He also presented how it is different from Data Mining. He enlightened the audients by highlighting about how the Execution Management system is beneficial to the industries to perform Process Mining. He explained the Basics of Applied Process Mining.

SESSION 2(2.00 PM to 4.00 PM )- Mr Manjunath Chandrashekar began the session by explaining about Event Logs. He described with examples of how event logs are very much required and stored as structured data. Later he briefed about what a Happy process means. He spoke about the Execution management System and gave the demo of Execution Management System (EMS) tool. The students and faculty were instructed on how to register and use the tool.
SESSION 3(11.00 AM to 1:00 PM)- Mr Manjunath highlighted the importance of Data Pipeline. He briefed about the various stages of Data pipeline. He also discussed and gave the hands-on session on the case study on- Order to Cash entry Level Case in the EMS tool.

SESSION 4 (2.00 PM to 4.00 PM )- Mr Manjunath gave the Case study and asked the students to implement it. The list of tasks to be performed was given. The students performed the tasks using the EMS tool with great enthusiasm. He also solved the doubts of the student and faculty arise during the hands-on session.
At the end of the session, he gave us the insight on the courses that are available to students and Faculty. Also, he briefed about the inteships that are provided to the students. He also spoke about how Celonis can assist Faculty who are interested in research in the area of Process Mining which includes providing data, or any subject matter experts help etc. Dr Sridevi Saralaya, HOD of CSE thanked the Resource person for agreeing to spend his time at SJEC and delivering Hands-on session on Process Mining. She presented him with a token of appreciation. She also thanked the participants for attending the two-day session.
Department of Computer Science and Engineering in association with SJEC Alumni Association organized a session on Big Data and Cloud for the sixth semester CSE students on 01 st April 2023 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The resource person for the session was Mr Dheeraj Madi, Technical Delivery Lead, Shell India (Royal Dutch Shell), Bengaluru. Ms Sunitha Guruprasad, Coordinator of the session and staff of CSE Department, welcomed the resource person and the participants. Ms Jessica Feandes, student of sixth semester, introduced the resource person, Mr Dheeraj Madi to the audience. Ms Sunitha G, florally welcomed the resource person. A total of 178 students were present and benefited from the session. Students were given information about Big Data, how and where the huge data is collected and used in real world. He also gave information about the variety of projects that are carried out in the companies using this data. He gave an introduction to Cloud and the way the data is stored in the cloud. A brief idea about the various projects that the students can carry out as a part of their final year project was given. He told the students to upgrade themselves with new skills which will be of great help to them in future. The session ended by thanking the resource person for conducting a wonderful session. Mr Jithin Johny, student of sixth semester presented a vote of thanks and gave feedback about the session. Dr Sofia Rego, staff of the CSE department, felicitated the resource person with a memento. Students participated enthusiastically for the whole duration of the session.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College organized a three day workshop on "Research in Artificial Intelligence by Domain: Applications and Technologies” from 21-23 March 2022. The three day workshop was inaugurated on 21st March 2022 at 9:30 AM. The programme started by invoking the blessings of the divine through a prayer which was followed by lightening the lamp. Dr Sridevi Saralaya, Head of the Department of CSE welcomed the gathering and gave an introduction of all the session topics, schedule and the respective session speakers. The Chief Guest of the function, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal and the president of the function, Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director, SJEC spoke about the importance of Artificial Intelligence and also wished the participants a happy leaing. Dr. Kavitha K Mahesh, Convenor of the workshop, presented the vote of thanks.

Dr Rio D'Souza spoke about the importance of AI and its significance in various fields. He also gave a brief introduction of evolutionary computing and how it is applied to the field of Neural Network.

Dr Manjunath Mulimani gave an introduction about Neural Networks and how Deep Leaing is used to train deeper and deeper neural networks. He spoke about the advancements/researches that has taken place in the field of Deep Leaing. The session concluded with a Q and A session and a note of thanks to the resource person.

Dr H L Shashirekha gave an introduction to Natural Language Processing. She explained the various tasks that is involved in NLP like linguistics, Speech recognition, Part of speech tagging, Word sense disambiguation, Named entity recognition, Sentiment analysis and many more. She gave various examples to support the topics. The session concluded with a Q and A session and a note of thanks to the resource person.
Day 2 (March 22, 2022):

Dr Anand Kumar M gave an introduction to NLP and human-computer interaction. He then gave insights into Conventional Machine Leaing, Transfer Leaing and Deep Leaing. He explained in detail about how transfer leaing can be used in NLP. He also explained how BERT model by giving various examples. At the end, he demonstrated the working of BERT model using Jupiter Notebook. The session concluded with a Q and A session and a note of thanks to the resource person.
Resource Person: Ms Veena Mayya, Assistant Professor, MIT, Manipal
Ms Veena Mayya gave an introduction to parallel programming and highlighted the difference between CPU and GPU programming. She explained the architecture of nVidia G80 GPU. She then gave a brief introduction of Cuda programming model. She then explained the role of threads, grids by using sample code examples. She demonstrated the working of CPU and GPU using Jupiter Notebook.

Dr Vasudeva started the session by giving a brief introduction to AI and Graph theory. He explained the importance of graph theory and the various algorithms that can be used. The function started with a prayer song by MS Veena Crasta followed by Lighting the lamp. Dr Sridevi Saralaya, HOD of CSE Department welcomed the gathering and the resource persons. This was followed by an address by the Chief Guest, Mr Robin D'Souza and the Principal, Dr Rio D'Souza. Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, In-charge Director of SJEC was the president of the function and Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice-Principal and Coordinator-Idea Labs was the Guests of Honour. Vote of thanks was given by Ms Sunitha G, coordinator of the workshop. The function was compered by Ms Nisha J Roche. A total of 30 faculty from various colleges participated in the workshop. The resource persons for the workshop were Mr Robin D'Souza and his team from Cyber Sapiens, Mangaluru.
The hands-on sessions included topics such as Cyber Security in the current industry, Cryptography & Steganography, Ethical Hacking, Eavesdropping, MITM Attack, OSINT, Google Dorking, Web Application Security, Social Engineering, SQL Injection, Cross Site Scripting Attack and Windows Hacking.
SJEC-AICTE IDEA Lab in association with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College organized a three-day Hands-On Training Workshop on Cyber Security from 9th to 11th February, 2023. The workshop was held from 9:00am to 5:00pm on all the three days. A total of 27 Inteal and Exteal staff and students participated in the workshop. The resource persons for the workshop were Mr Robin D'Souza and his team from Cyber Sapiens, Mangalore.
The registration process started at 9:00am which was followed by the Inauguration function from 9:30am on the first day. The function started with a prayer song by Ms Veena Crasta and Lighting the lamp. Dr Sridevi Saralaya, HOD of CSE Department welcomed the gathering and the resource person. This was followed by an address by the Chief Guest, Mr Robin D'Souza and the Principal, Dr Rio D'Souza. Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, In-charge Director of SJEC was the president of the function and Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice-Principal and Coordinator-Idea Labs was the Guests of Honor. Vote of thanks was given by Ms Sunitha G, coordinator of the workshop. The function was compered by Ms Nisha J Roche.
The session started at 10.30 am in lab (2202) after the tea break. The resource person, Mr. Robin D'Souza initiated the session with a brief lecture on the fundamental concepts of Cybersecurity like CIA triad, impact of social engineering etc. After an hour of theoretical session, the participants were given instructions to download the virtual box and thereby install kali linux in our systems. Lunch break was around 1pm and the session restarted sharp at 1.30 pm. In the afteoon session, familiarization of linux commands and different ways of installing scripts were discussed. Certain tools like gobuster tool, red_hawk, stego tool and pentest tool were discussed. After the tea break at 3.30 pm, the session continued with the basics of cryptography, its types and various examples, Numerous online encrypt decrypt tools were discussed and the session winded up at 5pm.
The second day session started at 9:15am. The topic of Steganography was explained. The technique of sending a secret message by hiding it in another file which could be text, image, or audio was demonstrated. The Openstego tool was used to encrypt and decrypt messages sent using steganographic technique. After the tea break at 11:15am, various other websites were explored wherein the user could get the details of his/her personal data that could have been compromised due to the hacking of company websites where the user had provided his/her credentials. Lunch break was around 1pm and the session restarted sharp at 1.30 pm. In the afteoon session the topic of Ethical hacking was discussed. The five steps such as Reconnaissance, Scanning, gaining access, maintaining access, and clearing records was demonstrated using various open source tools. After the tea break at 3.30 pm, the use of Burp Suite for eavesdropping was demonstrated through which the intruder could get access to the unauthorized data of users.
The third day session was mainly about ethical hacking. The session started at 9:15am. One of the tool to perform hacking is burpsuite. The resource persons informed about how to install the software. Once this was setup , hackings based on useame and passwords using brute force method were explained which was lead by hands on session. After the tea break at 11:15am, Phising tools were explained such as max phiser, and hands on session were also carried out. It was informed on how cautious a person must be while sharing personal information as hacking could be done in many ways. Lunch break was around 1pm and the session restarted sharp at 1.30 pm. In the afteoon session websites which reward people for identifying vulnerabilities in their websites were shown.
The session ended by a valedictory function which was compered by Ms Nisha Roche. The resource Persons, Mr Dheeraj, Mr Shahid Ahmed and Mr Raif were thanked and as a token of appreciation Dr Sridevi Saralaya handed over mementos to them. The Participants Mr Mohammed Saifuddeen and Mr Nithesh Pai shared their feedback about the sessions. Dr Sridevi Saralaya distributed certificates to all participants. The coordinators of the workshop were Ms Sunitha Guruprasad and Dr Sridevi Saralaya. The Department of Computer Science & Engineering organized a Workshop on "Intellectual Property Rights” on September 24, 2022. The resource person for the webinar was Dr. Purushothama Chippar, Professor & Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, SJEC Mangaluru. The objective of the workshop was to create awareness on Intellectual Property Rights among the faculty and researchers of the department and the institution at large.
The
program started with the welcoming of the resource person by the convener Dr
Kavitha K Mahesh, Associate Professor-CSE. Faculty and research scholars of
various departments were present on the occasion. The talk was attended by a
total of 32 participants including faculty, and research scholars from SJEC.
The subject of the talk mainly focused on Introduction to Intellectual
Property Rights, Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights, Introduction to
Patents - Why to Patent?, Patent-ability Criteria, Patents- Claim Drafting &
Interpretation, Patent Search, Copyright & Related Rights, Sensitization of
Researchers & Academicians to promote and contribute towards the economy,
society and overall future of IP, Commercialisation of IPR-How to commercialize
your invention?, role of IPR Cells & Incubators. The workshop was well
received and was appreciated by the participants.
The Department of
Computer Science and Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College organized a two-day
Hands-on workshop on "Block Chain and Solidity Smart Contracts” for the seventh
semester CSE students on September 23rd and 24th, 2022 from 9:30am to 4:45pm. A
total of 16 students participated in the workshop. The resource person for the
session was Dr Shashidhar R, Blockchain Researcher, Wipro Technologies,
Bangaluru.
Ms Sunitha G, Assistant
Professor, CSE Dept, welcomed the resource person and the participants. She gave
a brief introduction about the resource person and the purpose of conducting
the workshop. Dr Kavitha Mahesh, Incharge HOD of CSE department florally
welcomed the resource person.
The resource person
started the session by briefing about the blockchain technology and where it is
used. He gave information about Hash, Cryptocurrency, P2P network and Digital
ledger technology. This was followed by a hands-on session on Metamask, how to
create Ether and use it. In the afteoon session, the resource person gave
introduction about Smart Contracts and Solidity programming. A hands-on session
was conducted on Smart Contracts and Solidity. This was followed by an
assignment project using Geth.
On the second day, the
resource person gave introduction about blockchain, block propagation,
Byzantine Generals Problem, Proof of Work and Proof of Stake. This was followed
by a hands-on session using Truffle. In the afteoon session, different
projects were made to implement using Dapp. This was followed by hands-on
sessions using NFT and Dune Analytics.
The session ended by
thanking the resource person for conducting a wonderful session. Mr Wisal Sayeed,
student of seventh semester gave feedback about the workshop. Dr Kavitha
Mahesh, Incharge HOD of CSE department, felicitated the resource person. Students
participated enthusiastically for the whole duration of the sessions. The
coordinators of the workshop were Ms Sunitha Guruprasad and Dr Chandra Naik,
faculties of CSE department.
Faculty Research Conclave 2022 was organized from 10 to 11 Sept 2022 by the Office of Dean - R&D and Research and Facilities Group in association with Department of Computer Science and Engineering SJEC. The sessions were held in Spoorthy Hall (7th Floor AB-III block) on both days.
About 25 Research Supervisors from SJEC presented about their ongoing research activities. The presentation was mainly focused on scope for interdisciplinary research/collaborations from other Departments. About 85 faculty have actively participated in the Research Conclave 2022. The Conclave gave an opportunity to participants to know the research opportunities in collaboration with the other departments in the college.
The Research Conclave 2022 also included a Poster Presentation and Competition where at least one research scholar under each supervisor was given an opportunity to present his/her research work in the form of a poster. About 20 research scholars of SJEC presented their posters and the presentation was evaluated as per the given rubrics by a team of experts, which included the inteal judge Dr Vincent Crasta and the exteal judge Dr Shashikanth Karinka from NMAMIT Nitte. The winners of the poster presentations were I Prize - Mr Swaraj Lewis, Research Scholar, Mechanical Engineering and II Prize Ms Silma Pinto, Research Scholar, MBA Department.

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering organized a webinar titled "Expanding the Magic circle in Pervasive Casual Playing” on April 4, 2022. The resource person for the webinar was Dr Sofia Ester Pereira Reis. The objective of the workshop was to initiate and foster research prospects among faculty, students and research scholars using Artificial Intelligence with special focus in the area of Pervasive Playing.
The programme started with the welcoming of the resource person by the convener Dr Kavitha K Mahesh, Associate Professor-CSE. Dr Sridevi Saralaya, HoD-CSE and various faculty of the CSE department were present on the occasion. The talk was attended by a total of 41 participants including faculty, students and research scholars from SJEC and nearby twelve different colleges. The subject of the talk mainly focussed on Magic Circle, Expanding the magic circle with sound, weather and video, player's emotions, location and activities. The webinar was well received and the participants appreciated the webinar.

development programme (FDP) on "Blockchain Technology & its Applications"
from 4th to 6th March 2021. The three day FDP was
inaugurated virtually on 4th March 2021 at 9:30 AM. Dr Sridevi
Saralaya, Head- Department of CSE and Convener of the FDP welcomed the
management, resource persons and participants. Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal and
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director, SJEC spoke about the importance of
blockchain technology and also wished the participants a happy leaing. This
was followed by the introduction of all the session topics, schedule and the
respective session speakers.
Dr Manish Kumar gave
introduction about Blockchain technology and explained the concepts of Public
Ledgers, Bitcoin, Smart Contracts Transactions, Distributed Consensus, Public
vs Private Block chain, Hyperledger Fabric- Architecture, Identities and
Policies, Membership and Access Control. This was followed by a
hands-on session on Hyperledger Fabric.
Mr.
Raghavendra started the session by explaining the architecture of blockchain
and how distributed ledger works. He briefed about consensus algorithm, proof
of work, proof of stake and various applications of blockchain technology. This
was followed by a hands-on session on Ethereum and IPFS.
Dr Manish Kumar took up
the sessions for the first two days and Mr Raghavendra engaged the
session on the last day. Participants enthusiastically participated in all the
sessions which included hands-on sessions, quizzes and assignments.
The Alumni association of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a online webinar on 'Tricks to crack Placements' for the II and III year CSE students by Ms Shreema Simran, Site Reliability Engineer, Cohesity on 07-02-2021 from 9:30a.m. to 10:30a.m. The talk began with Ms Sana Parveen, III year CSE, welcoming the gathering. Ms Shreema Simran interacted with the students about the placement tricks to be followed from II year itself. She guided the students about the preparation required for placements by suggesting them to refer some websites, videos and aptitude training materials. She also insisted the participants prepare for group discussions which will help them to improve their communication skills. Overall the session was very informative. The session ended with Ms Renuka Tantry proposing the vote of thanks.
The Department of CSE under the Cipher Student Association organized a webinar on the various Certification Courses that were offered by the Department on February 1, 2021 from 2.00 pm to 3.00pm. The Resource Persons for the event were Ms. Lavina Dsilva and Ms. Supreetha R, Assistant Professors, Dept of CSE, SJEC. They explained about the Robotics Process Automata course and Cisco Certification Course which was offered in the department.
The webinar was then continued by Ms. Alonie Crasta, Student of the final year CSE, who spoke about the benefits of taking these certification courses and how it had helped her crack placements. 84 students from all the engineering branches of SJEC participated in the event. Ms. Nisha Roche Faculty coordinator of Cipher Association compered the event. The session concluded with Q & A session and a Vote of thanksRepresentatives
of the CSE Student Club Delta DevOps have actively engaged themselves in
training the 3rd year students for the upcoming placements. The
first session of this training was conducted on 11/03/2020. Students were
briefed about the Interview and Recruitment process for various companies. A
discussion about expected skills for job profiles such as Software
Engineers/Developers, Support Engineer, DevOps Engineer, etc was conducted.
Placement Drive experience of different companies was shared by 4th
year students. Q&A session was conducted were questions related to
placements and extra skills required for placement was discussed. Resume
formatting and write-up was also discussed. A series of such sessions to
improve placements have been planned for the entire semester by the Delta
DevOps club of CSE.
A session on "Introduction to GIT" was organised by Cipher
Department of
Computer Science Engineering in
association with CSI-SJEC Student Chapter, Industry
and Innovation Group (IIG) and Infosys Campus
Connect, organized an industrial visit to the
campus of Infosys at Mudipu, Mangaluru on 3rd March 2020 for the sixth semester
students of CSE department. A total of 98 students participated in the
industrial tour. Ms Supreetha R – SPOC-Infosys Campus Connect and Ms
Chaithra, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, accompanied
the students. Ms Sunitha Guruprasad, staff coordinator of CSI-SJEC
Student Chapter coordinated the visit.
After an hour long
commute to the campus, the person in-charge, Ms Swathi Jogi, Senior Member -
Education, at Infosys Limited, welcomed the students and the faculty. Students were made to gather in an auditorium
and given a brief introduction about the company which involved overview about the wide range of products
as well as services, work culture and CSR activities carried out by Infosys.
This was followed by a brief
power point presentation about the path traversed by Infosys.
The first technical
session was covered by Ms Thanuja Rao from education
and training department. She gave introduction
about infyTQ and developing global delivery model.
Mr
Susheel, IT trends project manager of block chain department, spoke about
current IT trends. He elaborated on transition from college campus to the corporate
life and briefed about the recent and popular trends in IT industry. He also stressed upon the importance of
communication skill, thinking out of the box, willingness to lea and adopt
new technologies and working in teams by sharing ideas. He also gave information about block chain and
Quantum computers.
Mr
Madhukar Nayak, spoke about Machine leaing, AI and Data Analytics. She said
that these are current trends in IT field and they would help a lot to the
students in future.
Students
were given an opportunity to put forward their queries and get information
about how the industry works. The sessions were both informative and entertaining and the
students leat a great deal about how the industry works. This was followed by
a campus tour where the Training Center, meeting rooms and other benefits
offered to the employees were shown.
The industrial visit
gave all the students an insight about the working of the industry. It also
gave them an idea about the work environment of the employees and the various
facilities available. The visit
was a memorable and encouraging experience for the students.
The CSI-SJEC Student Chapter
conducted a two day workshop on “Digital Image Processing and applications” on
28th and 29th February, 2020, in the Webinar Hall of CSE department. The
workshop was open for the interested students of BE-CSE. The resource persons
were Dr P C Siddalingaswamy and Dr Narendra V G, Associate Professors-Senior
(CSE), from MIT, Manipal.
The inauguration of
workshop was compered by Ms Rachel Gwynath Mendonsa, office bearer of CSI. The HOD of the Department of CSE, Dr Sridevi
Saralaya welcomed the resource persons, Dr P. C. Siddalingaswamy and Dr
Narendra V G with flowers.
Dr P. C. Siddalingaswamy started the
session with a brief introduction to Digital Image processing (DIP). He also
elaborated on the applications of Image processing concepts in various fields.
Difference between Computer Vision and Digital Image processing was discussed. The
second session was about Augmented / Virtual Reality, Medical Imaging, Image
registration, Image Enhancement and Image Segmentation methods. A brief
introduction on the various softwares that can be used for implementing the DIP
projects were given to the students.
The afteoon session was a Hands-on
session, where the students were taught about the applications of DIP using
MATLAB by Dr Narendra V G. A Miniproject was given to the students based on the
day’s leaing.
The next day’s session covered the
topics of real time applications that can be created using Image processing
tools. Case studies on application of
Image Processing to Medical diagnosis and application of Image Processing to
Food processing were explained in detail. A Miniproject was given to the
students based on the day’s leaing.
Students asked many doubts and
clarified it. Students got a useful demo and also a hands-on experience on
MATLAB and DIP. On the whole the session was interactive and helpful to
students.
Ms Sunitha Guruprasad, Coordinator
of CSI-SJEC Chapter, presented mementos to the resource persons for their
efforts. The session was concluded by thanking everyone by Mr Leroy Dsilva, Vice-President
of CSI.
A total of 55 students from sixth
semester CSE, participated in the workshop. Ms Sunitha Guruprasad, staff
coordinator of CSI-SJEC Student Chapter and the Office bearers of CSI
coordinated the workshop.
As
a part of the Department Specific session of the Induction programme for first
year CSE students, the members of Delta DevOps – a new student club of
department of Computer Science and Engineering briefed the first years about
the various activities and sessions conducted by the club. Ms Shreema Simran
and Ms Nasil Saniah provided information on the member recruitment process of
the club and the necessary skills and qualifications required to be a member. A
demo of various projects developed by the club was done to give a clear picture
of the ongoing activities of the club. Useful information about opportunities
available on online platforms such as Hackerank, HackerEarth, etc was also
discussed during this session. Students were introduced to LinkedIn and were
taught about how to build a professional profile.
The Computer Society Chapter, IEEE SJEC Student branch
organised a hands-on workshop on ‘Machine Leaing and its Applications by Mr.
Mohammed Ameer, founder of Diazonic Labs,
Bengaluru - a leading educational company which delivers workshops on various
upcoming technologies.
The workshop was conducted for three days from 10th
February, 2020 to 12th February, 2020. The session was attended by 39
final year students of SJEC. The session was aimed at helping the final year
students achieve a deeper and application level understanding in Machine
Leaing. The session involved pre-processing, choosing the right algorithm
based on each problem statement, model fitting, how over fitting can be
avoided, image processing and mini project.
Ms Pramila M, Assistant Professor, Department of
Computer Science and Engineering, welcomed the students to the workshop and
introduced Mr Mohammed Ameer who was the trainer for the workshop.
Day 1 was a theory and an introductory session on
python and various python libraries used for Machine leaing. In the moing
session the trainer explained the theoretical aspects of Machine Leaing and
how it is different from the usual method of processing the data. An hour was spent on understanding the basics
of python and the various data structures that were going to be used for
writing the programs for Machine Leaing. The afteoon session involved
working with Numpy, Matplotlib and Pandas libraries. The session ended with the
trainer giving brief introduction on Machine leaing model and the 9 essential
steps to design any model.
Day 2 focussed on how various types of data have to be
pre-processed and converted into Data Frame. This involved Web Scraping of
statistics of a batsman to derive insights on the batsman’s overall
performance. Scikit Lea libraries were used to build the regressors and
classifiers. Linear Regression, Decision tree, Support Vector Machine,
K-Nearest Neighbours were some of the algorithms whose working and application
was taught using the various use cases given by the trainer.
Day 3 involved working with images and video datasets.
First half of the day was devoted to leaing the various functions in the
OpenCV library which was used to process the image and creating a model from
image and video dataset. Latter half involved a mini project where a face
recognition application was developed and deploying OCR by Google tesseract on
Web by using the Flask framework.
Half an hour was allotted for a Q&A session where students clarified doubts and issues related to their final year projects. The workshop ended with the trainer giving tips on getting better skills and how networking was beneficial for fresher’s in the industry.
The Department of Computer Science and
Engineering in association with SJEC-MATLAB, CSI-SJEC Student Chapter and
Industry and Innovation Group (IIG) hosted the
Faculty Development Programme on "MATLAB and its applications in the areas of
Image Processing, Computer Vision and Deep Leaing" on 10th to 12th February
2020 for all the interested faculty and research scholars from various colleges
in the state. The FDP was coordinated by Ms Sunitha Guruprasad and Ms Chaithra
of Computer Science & Engineering Department. The main aim of the FDP was to bring together Postgraduate students,
Research Scholars and Faculty who were
interested to gain more knowledge on Deep Leaing, Computer Vision and Machine
Leaing. There were total of 2
participants from neighboring colleges and 19 inteal participants. The programme began with a formal Inaugural session on
10th February 2020. Ms Anusha M M, Asst Professor CSE Dept welcomed the guests, the resource person and the
participants of the workshop. Dr
Sridevi Saralaya, HOD of Computer Science and Engineering welcomed the guest Mr Rakshith B S, Senior
Application Engineer, CoreEL Technologies, Bangalore with a bouquet of flower. Ms Anusha M M briefed
the participants on the concepts on Deep Leaing & Machine Leaing and
also briefed about the importance of MATLAB.
The FDP session began with an introduction of Math works Products, MATLAB
programming basics, numerical computation, data analysis and visualization ,Resizing
an image, Image Rotation, Translation of image, Converting color space of an
image:, Deblur images, Dehazing algorithm, Filtering/Denoising using guided
filter and Smoothening: Average filter, Gaussian filter, Median filter, Edge
preserving filters, Image sharpening.
The second day included the following topics:
Image thresholding, Adding noise into the image, Image noise reduction,
Filtering image using Gaussian/Average filters. Morphological operations:

The third day
of the FDP included the topics of Machine leaing using MATLAB:

(Root Mean Square Error), Export Model, improving predictive models, Training
the models, Predictions, Confusion chart, Classification - Deep leaing tool

At the
end of the programme, HOD appreciated the resource person for their
whole-hearted contribution towards the success of the workshop and presented them
with a memento as a token of appreciation. Ms Anusha M M thanked all the participants for their active
participation in the workshop and
invited the participants to attend many such workshops in the future.
The training programme ended with the distribution
of certificates to all the participants. This three-day FDP was appreciated by all the participants
who were happy to have received such valuable information from an enthusiastic
MATLAB and Deep Leaing specialist.
The IEI
association of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a workshop
on ‘Docker basics’ for the II year students of Computer Science and Engineering
on November 18, 2019 from 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. in the Webinar Hall of the
department.
The
workshop began with Ms Anusha M M, Assistant Professor in the Department of
CSE, Chairperson & CSE Department Coordinator for IEI welcoming the
gathering and introducing the resource persons Mr Augustine Correa who runs
Hackerspace Mumbai and is a community leader for Docker Mumbai & Docker
Mangaluru, Mr Karthik Bhat and Mr Prashanth Shenoy from Unicourt India,
Mangalore.
The
workshop aimed at introducing the students to containers, virtual machines and
running applications using Docker platform. Mr Augustine Correa explained to
students about what containers are and the advantages of having a virtualized
OS. Students were given access to a ‘Docker playground’ and were taught to
create Docker files, containers, build container images and use volumes to
persist data.

The
CSI-SJEC Student Chapter in association with the Industry and Innovation Group
(IIG) organized a talk on “Start a start-up – Become an Entrepreneur “on 26th
October 2019 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in Webinar Hall. The Resource Person for
the talk was Mr Gopalakrishna Bhat Kakunje, Managing Director of Kakunje
Software Private Ltd, Mangaluru.
The
Talk was organized for the 7th semester CSE students. The programme was
conducted to give the students an insight into entrepreneurship and its
challenges.
Mr
Aronstun, student of 5th semester CSE was the Master of Ceremony of the
function and he warmly welcomed the gathering. Mr Gopalakrishna Bhat then
opened his session with the perks of being an entrepreneur and also mentioned
that one should not restrict themselves to a particular discipline and embrace
innovation. He explained the foundation for a start-up and the various schemes
provided by the govement to encourage young entrepreneurs. He stressed on the
role of accelerators and incubation centres and the kind of start-up ecosystems
they provide. He then went on to discuss his own entrepreneurship jouey and
the various challenges that he faced, the major ones being Account and Employee
management. He also spoke about Licenses, patents and copyrights. He concluded
his session stating that one should focus on customer satisfaction and quality
and also added that courage and willingness to do everything and anything are
the two most important qualities of a successful entrepreneur.
On
the whole, the session was informative and insightful and gave the students a
peek into transforming their ideas into a business.
The
vote of thanks was proposed by Mr Aldrin, student of 7th semester
CSE. The session concluded at 1:00 pm and around 120 students attended the talk.
The programme was coordinated by Ms Sunitha Guruprasad, Assistant Professor in
the Department of CSE and staff Coordinator of CSI-SJEC Chapter. The Office bearers and members of CSI provided
all the help required to conduct the session successfully. As a token of
appreciation, Mr Gopalakrishna Bhat Kakunje was felicitated with a college

Pvt. Ltd, Mangaluru interacted with the students about the opportunities that lie
ahead after engineering education. He guided the students about the preparation
required for higher studies and the qualifying examinations that are an
admissions requirement for postgraduate degrees.

Computer Science and Engineering organized a one-day hands-on workshop on ‘Web
Scraping with Python’ for the III year CSE students on 21.09.2019 from 9.00
a.m. to 5.00 p.m. in the IoT lab (Room no.3607), Academic Block-III.
The workshop began with Ms Anusha M M,
Assistant Professor in the Department of CSE, Chairperson & CSE Department
Coordinator for IEI welcoming the gathering and introducing the resource persons
Mr Karthik Bhat, Mr John Feandes, Mr Jason Misquith, Mr Jovel Cardoso, Mr
Jaison Castelino from Unicourt India, Mangalore. The session began with Mr
Karthik Bhat introducing the students to the basics of Python programming
language, operations with files, the datatypes and data structures required for
web scraping. The students were exposed to a hands-on experience on scraping
data from websites with BS4 package and getting all the data from websites in
appropriate format. Students were divided into teams and given problem
statements to work on with Mr Karthik Bhat’s team members facilitating student
leaing.

The organizing team consisted of chairperson,

The
workshop on LaTex which was organised by the Cipher Association was conducted
on August 31, 2019 at St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor. A total of 132
students of 5th semester CSE attended this workshop.
The
resource persons for the workshop were Ms. Chaitra and Ms. Sona Mundody,
Assistant Professors, Department of CSE, SJEC. The session started with
Ms.Chaitra and Ms.Sona guiding the students about overleaf an online LaTex
editor and already installed document preparation system. Instructions were
given to create a report for the project. Students were given the knowledge of
how to create the front page, insert heading, sub headings, and insert images.
Brief explanation was given about how to insert equations and to create a
simple table, combining rows and columns and about captions, labels and
references. Further explanation was given to create cover page, add page
numbers and templates.
The hands-on session helped the
students to get a better understanding of LaTex. The students interactively
participated in the workshop. The overall aim of providing knowledge of
Document typesetting using LaTex to the students was successfully accomplished.
The
Research Committee in association with the Department of Computer science and
Engineering organized a talk on “Developing a Methodology for Multidisciplinary
Research” by Dr Ashok Rao, Advisor and Research Professor VVCE, Mysuru, Former
Head Network Project CEDT, IISc, from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm in Spoorthi Hall on
21st May 2019. Dr Rachana P, Associate Professor, CSE welcomed Dr Sridevi
Saralaya, HOD of Computer Science and Engineering Department, HOD’s of various
other departments and faculties and introduced the resource person to the
audience. Dr Sridevi Saralaya, HOD of Computer Science and Engineering
Department welcomed the resource person with a bouquet of flowers.
Resource
person focused on the following objectives:

The IEI Association of the
Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a talk for the II year
CSE students on ‘Engineering and Innovation’ by Dr Pooalatha G, Associate
Professor, Department of Information & Communication Technology, Manipal
University on April 13th , 2019 at Bishop Aloysius Paul Conference
Hall, Academic block – II from 9.30 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. The aim of this talk was
to show some direction to the second year engineering students
of the Department of CSE on why it is important to have an innovative mindset,
how to identify problem statements, the sources available for the same, how to
proceed further when there is an innovative idea, what opportunities/support is
available to the students to take an innovative idea further to
implementation.
The talk
began with Ms Anusha M M, Assistant Professor in the Department of CSE and
Department Coordinator for IEI-CSE welcoming the gathering and introducing the
resource person Dr Pooalatha G to the gathering. Dr Pooalatha interacted
with the students on how to foster creative research, the benefits students involving
in research have, the basics of research, types of research, ethics involved in
research, how to identify appropriate sources to publish the research done and
the tools available to check for plagiarism. Dr Pooalatha shed light on what
differentiates discovery, invention & innovation and how to cultivate an
innovative mindset. Dr Pooalatha guided the students on the sources of
problem statements, financial support available for the students for their
innovations, patenting and research inteships. Dr Pooalatha also inspired
the students by talking about the examples of innovations around us and how the
smallest of innovations makes a difference.
The session
ended with the Coordinator of the IEI Association for the Department of CSE, Ms
Anusha M M proposing the vote of thanks.
The CSI-SJEC Chapter organized a hands-on workshop on
“Neural Network and its Applications” using Python on 13th April 2019 from 9:30
am to 4:00 pm in the Webinar hall of CSE department. The workshop was open for
the third and fourth year students of BE-CSE and second year students of MCA.
The resource person for the session was Dr Smitha Pai, Professor, MIT, Manipal.
Ms. Sunitha Guruprasad, staff coordinator of CSI-SJEC
Chapter welcomed the resource person. Initially, a pre-assessment was done to
just gauge the knowledge of students on Neural Network Technology. Dr Smitha
Pai started the session with a brief introduction to Neural Network. She also
elaborated on the applications of Neural Network concepts in various fields.
The resource person highlighted the cutting edge technology by giving some real
world examples.
The second session was a Hands-on session. A brief
introduction on the use of numpy functions and numpy matrix/vector operations
of Python was given to the students. This was followed by code on understanding
"broadcasting" and vectorization of code. The group dispersed for
lunch at 1 pm.
The afteoon session started at 2:00 pm. The session
included topics on ‘Building a logistic regression classifier to recognize
cats’, ‘Planar data classification with one hidden layer’, ‘Building a deep
neural network for image classification with as many layers’ and ‘Applying a
deep neural network for supervised leaing’.
The workshop concluded at 4:00 pm by felicitating the
resource person with a memento by the staff coordinator and delivering the vote
of thanks. The workshop was jointly coordinated by Ms Sunitha Guruprasad and Mr
Sunil Kamath, Coordinators of CSI. Ms Theresa Reshma Pinto, Ms Nikhitha Shetty
and Ms Divya B, technical staffs of the department, provided technical help to
the students throughout the workshop.
Students got a useful demo and also a hands-on
experience on Neural Network and Python. On the whole the session was
interactive and helpful to students.
The event named TROJAN SPARTANS was held on second day of
Tiara 2019 that is on 14th March 2019.The event consisted of two
rounds namely Mind Sweepers and Maverick Helpers. There were a total of 22
teams that registered for the event that began by 9:45am.
The first round Mind Sweepers was divided into two sub-rounds.
The first sub-round consisted of quizzes from technical and non-technical
fields that was conducted through audiovisual medium. The second sub-round was
crosswords that were handed out on sheets to each team. The participants were
eliminated based on the total score of the two sub-rounds with the top ten
teams making it through to the second and final round. The final round was
named Maverick Helpers.
This round began with teams having to debug programs, solve
flowcharts and assemble jumbled code to find out a particular phrase in order
to win. The fastest two teams were selected as winners. The first place was
awarded to Anurag D Shetty and Glen Ignatius Lobo from 3rd year Computer
Science Department.
The second prize was bagged by Nasil Saniah and Shravan
Baliga K again from 3rd year Computer Science.
The prize and certificates were presented to the winners by
Mr.Bola Sunil Kamath, Associate Professor at St.Joseph Engineering College. The
event along with prize distribution concluded by 12pm, marking the end of an
extremely successful event.
The
event started with a total of 15 teams at 11:30 am in class 3503. The first
round was “Tech Buzz” which was divided into 2 parts. Part 1 was a quiz round
based on general knowledge, latest movies, series, riddles, etc. Part 2 was based
on logos and famous personalities. All the questions were displayed on the
screen for a minute. The students had to write down the answers on the given
sheet of paper. The students were asked to wait for a while till the papers
were corrected. At the end, the questions were displayed once again. A total of
5 teams got disqualified in this round.
Second
round began at 12:15 am. In this round, “Oh My Bug”, teams were asked to go
around the campus, find some significant spot and take snaps of themselves with
a creative pose. They had to then send the pictures to one of the coordinators.
There only given 30 minutes. All the students assembled back in the classroom
at 12:45 am. Five teams were selected on the basis of the most creative pose
and good photography.
Third
round, Code Warriors, started at 2:00 pm. Here, one of the teammate was taken
to a lab and was required to code a small and simple program using either C,
Python or Java language. 2 sets of question papers were prepared. The other
teammate was asked to take a chit which guided them where to go. No mobile
phones were allowed. One volunteer was present at each of the spot to ensure
nobody used their phones. Once the team member in lab executed the code
correctly, he was given a riddle to hint him where his other teammate was. They
were supposed to find their teammates and come back to 3503 classroom.
Everyone
took part in the event enthusiastically and the volunteers and faculty members
helped in the smooth coordination of the event.
The
first winners were Nasil Saniah and Shravan Baliga from St Joseph Engineering
college. They won a total of Rs 1500.
The
second winners were Oliva Sharol Correa and S B Shubha from St Joseph
Engineering college. They won a total of Rs 1000.
Accompanying other pumped up events in the CSE department,
students were set ablaze to showcase their presentation skills in a versatile
manner. Yes, this is in context to the overwhelming event coined Papyrus. This
events cynosure was, delivering knowledge on recent technical topics they

Professor-CSE, and Ms. Apaa K, Assistant Professor-CSE. It commenced at sharp
11 AM in Academic block III, sixth floor, room number 3504. This event was
compered by Ms. Divyanjalin A Soans. She initiated with a welcome speech and
wished all the participants their streak of luck. Mr. Gerald H Feandes, Assistant Professor-CSE, Mr.
Shreenath Acharya, Assistant Professor-CSE, Ms. Sumangala N, In-charge
HOD-Computer Applications, Mr. Gururaja S, Assistant Professor- Computer
Applications, were the judges of the competition. There
was a total of 28 teams that participated. Students from inter-colleges were
also allowed to participate and put-forth their anonymous ideas. Ms. Dynita Pinto then briefed about the rubrics for the
event. Since massive students showed tremendous interest in this event, they
were split into two classrooms. The remainder were carry-forwarded in the
neighbouring classroom.
All the teams showed
great enthusiasm and performed well. The winners were Ms. Deekshitha from SJEC
and the second prize was bagged by Ms. Divya and Ms. Khateeja Rukshana from
Srinivas School of Engineering. Mementos were given to all the judges and the
faculty were falicitated by Dr. Sridevi Saralaya, HOD-CSE department.The
student coordinators for the event were Ms. Deekshita and Ms. Christal Lobo
from fourth year CSE department.
The Mega event for the Department of Computer Science
and Engineering for Tiara 2019 was conducted on 13.03.2019, day 1 of the fest.
The event was conducted by the student event coordinators Elrica Costa and
Jaanhvi Hehar. A total of 64 participants took part in this event. The event
began at 11 a.m. and consisted of 3 rounds.
The first round was conducted in Academic Block 3 in
rooms 3602 and 3603. This round consisted of riddles, mysteries and logical
reasoning problems that the participants had to solve using their wits. The top
12 teams qualified for the next round.
Round 2 consisted of each team being divided into two
sub teams. One sub team solved riddles to obtain clues and directed the other
half of their team to corresponding locations based on the clues. This round
took place all across the campus. The first 8 teams to complete this round
qualified for the next round.
The final round of Adroit was conducted in the college
football ground. It was divided into two sub rounds. The first sub round was an
obstacle course that was created using tires, bricks and tables. One
participant from each team had to navigate through this course blind folded
while his team mates guided him through the course. 6 teams qualified for the 2nd
sub round which was the deciding round for the event. The final round was a
human X and O game where each team had to place their team members tu by tu
in a 3 by 3 grid of 9 chairs. The round and event was won by Prasanna Kumar P.,
Manikanta, Abhishek Suresh and Hussain Salman from A.J Institute of Engineering
and Technology and the runners up were Mohammed Yake Ruknaddin, Zuyufullah
Manna and Siddique from Anjuman Institute of Technology and Management.
The event concluded with the prize distribution where
the winning team and the runners up were handed certificates along with a cash
prize of rupees 2500 and 1500 respectively by Ms. Sujatha M., Assistant
Professor, Department of Computer Science.
Department of Computer Science and Engineering in
association with Tiara-2019 organized Pubg which is a gaming event on 13th
March 2019 in Academic Block III, 6th floor, Webinar Hall from 11:30 a.m.
onwards. A total of 54 teams participated in the event. The event was conducted
by the student event coordinators, Crystal Fay Dsouza and Shreema Simran.
Manjesh G and Errol D’Mello spearheaded the event.
Pubg is a game where you start with nothing and have
to scavenge and collect weapons and equipment. The game is ultimately a battle
to the last player standing, with 100 players on an 8*8 Km Island.
Each team comprised of 4 members who actively
participated in this gaming event and in tu this event provided a platform
for enhancing their sills. The participants had to get their own mobile for
participation. The teams were divided into slots of 3 with each slot consisting
of 25, 15 and 14 teams respectively. Top 5 teams were selected from each slot
and they competed in the finals to become the ultimate champion.

The first prize was bagged by Ajanth kotian, Chethan
Shetty,Shivaraj and renson Dsouza from 2nd year, St. Joseph Engineering College
and the second prize was won by Manjunath, Ashwin R S, Mazin and Muhammad
Rumaiz from 3rd year, St. Joseph Engineering College.

and Rs. 1000 respectively.
CSI – SJEC Chapter and CIPHER -
student association of CSE department, organized an industrial visit to the
campus of Infosys at Mudipu, Mangaluru on 12th March 2019 for the
sixth semester students of CSE department. A total of 123 students participated
in the industrial tour. Ms Sunitha Guruprasad – Coordinator of CSI chapter, Ms
Gayana M N – Coordinator of CIPHER and Mr Sunil Kamath – Department Coordinator
of CSI, accompanied the students.
After an hour-long commute to the
campus, the person in-charge, Ms Veena Amrith, Senior Member - Education,
Training & Assessment at Infosys Limited, welcomed the students and the
faculty. Students were made to gather in
an auditorium and given a brief introduction about the company which involved
overview about the wide range of products as well as services, work culture and
CSR activities carried out by Infosys. This was followed by a brief power point
presentation about the path traversed by Infosys.
The technical session was covered by
Mr Raviraj Belma, Senior Project Manager at Infosys. He elaborated on
transition from college campus to the corporate life and briefed about the
recent and popular trends in IT industry. He also stressed upon the importance
of communication skill, thinking out of the box, willingness to lea and adopt
new technologies and working in teams by sharing ideas. Students were given an
opportunity to put forward their queries and get information about how the
industry works.
The sessions were both informative
and entertaining and the students leat a great deal, about how the industry
works. This was followed by a campus tour where the Training Center, meeting
rooms and other benefits offered to the employees were shown.
The industrial visit gave all the
students an insight about the working of the industry. It also gave them an
idea about the work environment of the employees and the various facilities
available. The visit was a memorable and encouraging experience for the
students.
A technical talk on “Recent Trends in
Image Processing” organized by IEEE SJEC student branch in association with
Department of Computer Science and Engineering for the students of Computer Science
and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical and
Electronic Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College on 6th March, 2019.

and IEEE student Branch coordinator-CSE welcomed speaker Dr Jidesh P. and the
gathering and introduced the speaker Dr Jidesh P., Assistant Professor,
Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, NITK, Surathkal to the
audience. Dr Rachana P., Associate
Professor of CSE Department florally welcomed the speaker with a baguette.
The speaker spoke about image
processing techniques in current research perspective. He gave an insight on
enhancement of image, denoising, restoration, morphological processing,
segmentation, compression techniques. He also gave insight to projects and
research in the area of image processing, tools and open access database
available to carry out research.
There was an enthusiastic response
from the students. The registration was limited and 30 students took part in
this talk. This talk helped the students gain knowledge on research in the area
of image processing in this technological world. The interaction with the
speaker also helped few students to get different project ideas.

participants. Dr Rachana P, Associate Professor, CSE Dept felicitated the

A workshop on block chain technology
was organized by CIPHER, A student association of the Department of Computer
Science and Engineering for the students of VI Semester on 23rd February
2019 from 10:00 am to 05:00 pm at Bishop Aloysius Hall, followed by CSE webinar
Hall. Mr. Marimuthu C, Research Scholar,
Department of CSE, NITK, Surathkal was the resource person.
Initially, a pre-assessment was done
to just gauge the knowledge of students on Block Chain Technology. Then, the
session began with an introduction on the basic ideology of block chain
technology. The resource person highlighted the cutting edge technology by
giving some real world examples.
Through analogy, different use cases,
he explained the wide applications of blockchain which includes energy sector,
supply chain management, e-voting, real estates, data storage etc.
The speaker also told about the
various end users and terminologies used in block chain. Mr Marimuthu also made
awareness on overall adoption rate of block chain technology. Furthermore, he
made it an interactive session discussing the merits and demerits of the block
chain process. The group dispersed for lunch at 1 pm.
The workshop resumed at 2 PM. The
post session was hands-on. In this afteoon session, the presenter told about
ethereum which is a blockchain based application.
The participants were instructed to
install ethereum and configured it according to the directions given by the
speaker. He also told about the various commands used in establishing the
connection and data mining. The students worked in pairs and performed data mining
by sharing their IDs. As a parting advice, the resource person mentioned that
one should update their technical skills by attending such workshops. The
workshop concluded at 4:30 pm by felicitating the resource person with a
memento by the staff coordinator, and Ms Jahnavi Hehar delivering the vote of
thanks.
CIPHER –the student association of
Computer Science Department of St. Joseph Engineering College hosted an
Intra-Departmental fest ‘AURORA-2019’ on 21st February, 2019. The
fest comprised of three events that were categorized into technical,
semi-technical and non-technical.

The Department of Computer Science
and Engineering hosted the Faculty
Development Refresher Programme on “New Age Skills for Excellence in Teaching” on February 16th , 2019 for
the faculty members of different departments of SJEC. The FDP aimed at bringing awareness among the
faculty members on the skills required to excel in teaching in the present day.
There were a total of 30 faculty members from across the various departments of
SJEC that participated in the FDP.
Ms
Pramila D’Souza from the Department of Chemistry was the master of the
ceremony. The FDP began with Ms D’Souza welcoming the gathering. The Principal Dr Rio D'Souza introduced the
resource person Mr Praveen Kamath, General Manager & Head HR- Technology
Practice Units, Wipro Ltd., Bengaluru to the participants. Dr Rio D'Souza also
addressed the participants about the expectations of the present day students
from the faculty members and the steps that can be taken to meet them. Rev. Fr
Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, The Director , Rev. Fr Rohith D'Costa , Assistant
Director, Dr Joseph Gonsalves, Chief – R & D , Dr Sridevi Saralaya , Head
of the Department of CSE graced the occasion.
Mr
Praveen Kamath shared his expertise with the participants on the skills
required by the faculty members in the present day to excel in their
profession. The participants took part
in the FDP enthusiastically throughout the day and shared their experience at
the end of the session. Dr Rio D'Souza
presented a memento to the resource person Mr Praveen Kamath appreciating his
contribution for the benefit of the faculty members. The FDP ended with the
distribution of participation certificates to the participants. The Convener of
the FDP, Ms Anusha M M, Assistant Professor from the Department of Computer Science
and Engineering proposed the vote of the thanks.
