Global University Fair at SJEC

Office of Collaborations in association with Planet Education Kaataka was organised The Global University Fair on April 23, 2023, at Kalam Auditorium was a highly anticipated event facilitating student engagement with prestigious inteational universities. Attendees included students from diverse academic backgrounds, notably third and final-year Engineering, MBA, MCA students, and alumni. 

Renowned institutions like the National University of Singapore, Monash University (Australia), University of Sydney (Australia), RMIT University (Australia), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), and University of Strathclyde (UK) participated, offering insights into academic programs and career prospects, particularly focusing on exclusive STEM Masters events. 

Representatives from StudyGroup provided information on other reputable universities, while representatives from ETS (GRE/TOEFL) and banks were present to offer comprehensive support and information, enriching the educational experience. 

The fair aimed to encourage active participation by the students, providing a platform for interaction and exploration, empowering students to make informed decisions about their academic and professional futures.

 

Online session on Menstrual Health and Hygiene

The Department of Mathematics and DISCIPLINE AND EQUITY GROUP in association with CICC and Jagruti conducted an online session on "Menstrual Health and Hygiene” by the Global Hunt Foundation for all the female students and staff of SJEC. The resource person Mrs Chitra Jalal, conducted the session on 19th April, 2024 from 3pm to 4pm, Spoorthi Hall for staff and students of SJEC. A total of 50 students from the UG and PG programme were present for the session. 

Points covered by the resource persons: Mrs Chitra Jalal gave a comprehensive understanding on the what, why and how of the Menstrual cycle. She spoke about the various phases in women, the changes that occur in the body, and social taboos related to it. She also highlighted the various facts and myths associated with menstruation and hygiene practices to be maintained during Menstruation.

 

MoU signed with Educational Testing Service (ETS) India

On April 8, 2024, St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru, and Educational Testing Service (ETS) India officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at SJEC Campus, Mangaluru. This collaboration aims to offer holistic guidance and support to students aspiring for higher education in esteemed inteational universities, along with comprehensive preparation for the GRE and TOEFL exams.

The MoU was signed by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, and Mr Lejo Sam Oommen, Chief Revenue Officer of ETS India. Key officials including Rev. Fr Kenneth Crasta, Assistant Director, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, and Ms Diana Monteiro, Collaborations Officer from SJEC, alongside Mr. Karthik Rajasekaran, Director Business Development B2L Channel, and Mr. Naveen Kumar, Senior Business Development Manager, representing ETS, were present at the signing ceremony.

ETS, a renowned entity based in the United States, conducts essential examinations such as the TOEFL and GRE. ETS India, its subsidiary, plays a pivotal role in facilitating these assessments within the Indian context. This collaboration aims to augment GRE and TOEFL test-preparation resources, thereby enhancing students' prospects for inteational higher education.

 

MBA: Valedictory Programme of ZEPHYR 2024

The valedictory ceremony of Zephyr 24 was held on 27th March 2024 at 4.30pm in Kalam Hall, V floor, AB II. The programme commenced with a solemn invocation of God's blessings, seeking guidance and grace for all present. It set the tone for an evening filled with gratitude and celebration.

The dignitaries were escorted to the dias. Dr. Rio Dsouza, Principal, SJEC was the Chief Guest. Fr. Kenneth Crasta, Assistant Director of SJEC, presided over the event. Ms. Acharya Chitralekha, the faculty coordinator, and student coordinators Hrithik Chand and Prajwal S. K. were in attendance.

Dr. Rio Dsouza delivered a remarkable talk, sharing essential insights and motivating participants to get to know one another and make connections. He also noted that such occasions provide a platform for connecting with great brains, which will be advantageous in one's career. He emphasised the importance of making a lasting impact on another person. It provides for emotional bonds. He commended the coordinators on the success of ZEPHYR 2024 and complimented the participants for actively participating in the events.

Following the Chief Guest's address, Fr. Kenneth Crasta, Assistant Director of SJEC, presided over to reflect on the significance of the day. He emphasised the attributes of a leader and their importance. He spoke about not being discouraged by failures. He appreciated the event organisers for their success.

One of the highlights of the evening was the distribution of prizes and awards. Ms. Yashika took over at this event. The deserving winners across various competitions were felicitated. It was a moment of pride and joy for both the winners and their respective institutions.

MBA: Zephyr 2024

The department of Business Administration, MBA at SJEC hosted Zephyr- 2024 with the theme Business Warfare-Navigating The Matrix, a two-day event on 26 and 27 March 2024 in Kalam Hall, 5th floor, Academic Block - II. 

The program began by seeking the blessings of the almighty through a prayer led by the MBA choir. Mr. Akhilesh B C, Project Manager, Moody's Rating, Bangalore was the Chief guest for the inauguration ceremony. Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal SJEC, Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director-SJEC, Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean-MBA, Ms Acharya Chitralekha J, Faculty Coordinator, Mr Prajwal and Mr Hrithik Chand, Student Coordinators were present for the program.

Mr Prajwal S K, Student Coordinator welcomed the gathering. Zephyr was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by all the dignitaries. Mr. Akhilesh B C, the Chief guest emphasized on leadership by highlighting the traits and characteristics of successful leaders. He also encouraged students to be courageous to make tough decision. His philosophy is to "take care of people and people will take care of your work". A leader must see what others can't see and lead the people. He also quoted that, "Success is a jouey and not a destination." And concluded saying, " no risk no reward", and encouraged students to take calculated risk. From his experience, he says that wherever there is comfort, there will be no growth.

Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC was the Guest of Honour for the program. He spoke about the importance of putting in efforts. By giving example of a ball, Principal emphasized that failing is easier and highlighted the importance of working hard to be successful. He pointed up about rising after failing which can lead to enterprising. Dr. Rio D'Souza handed over the token of gratitude to the Chief guest.

Rev Fr. Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, the President of the program gave the presidential remarks. He encouraged students to lea, grow and inspire people around them. He also stressed on being humble and contributing towards 

Sweeny Reanna Larsado, 2nd year MBA, rendered the vote of thanks. Ms. Komal, 2nd year MBA compered the event. The inauguration was followed by commencement of management events such as business quiz, best manager, HR, Finance, Marketing and many more. The second day of the fest will showcase the cultural talent of the participants with various events like Treasure Hunt, Brand Rangoli, Face Painting, Fitness Fight, Gaming, Duet Singing and Group Dance. The fest received enormous response with all together 18 colleges participating from in and around Mangalore and Shivamogga.

 

Alumni Interaction with Mr. John Rohan on the topic “Leadership Skills and Competencies”

The Department of Business Administration, MBA, SJEC hosted an alumni interaction with Mr. John Rohan, an Alumnus of 2007-2009 batch on the topic "Leadership Skills and Competencies" on March 19, 2024 at Prerana hall, Ground Floor, Academic Block III. Medonna Miranda introduced and welcomed the speaker.

The speaker began the session with a tale about his travels to Kerala. He emphasized the level of service provided to him, providing insights into the value of management principles. He revealed his conviction in three essential elements: hard work, dedication, and God's grace. He highlighted the need to compete with oneself to get better results. He addressed qualities like honesty, clear goals, communication, readiness, decision-making, and many more.

He engaged the students in a fun team-building activity. He shared his professional experiences, inspiring students to develop habits that enable them to pursue their passions. He concluded the session by wishing the students a fruitful two-year MBA jouey and a bright future. Medonna expressed gratitude to the speaker for his presence and providing his unique viewpoints.

 

MoU with Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC), Mangaluru

St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) and Govement Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC), Mangaluru, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 13, 2024. The agreement, signed by Rev. Fr. Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, and Dr. Lakshminarayana CR, Principal of GTTC Mangaluru, aims to impart skill development and skill enhancement training.

Focused on skill development and technological innovation, the MoU offers students of BE exposure to inteship and training opportunities. This collaboration seeks to bolster their prospects for placement, providing a valuable bridge between academia and industry.

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including Rev. Fr Kenneth Crasta, Assistant Director, Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal, Dr Shreeranga Bhat, HoD ME, and faculty members from SJEC and GTTC. This event signifies a significant milestone in fostering practical leaing and preparing students for successful careers.

 

PG Courses Inauguration 2023-24

St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru inaugurated its PG Courses for the year 2023-24 on 07th March 2024 at Kalam Auditorium, Vth Floor, Academic Block II of the college.

The program began with a prayer song, invoking Almighty's blessings.

Ms. Ananya Hebbar, Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist, MResult Services, Mangalore was the Chief Guest for the program. Dr. Prakash Pinto, Dean, Department of MBA welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest.

The lamp was lighted by the dignitaries on the dais.

Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal SJEC, addressed the gathering and welcomed all the first-year students. He spoke about self-discovery and the need to understand oneself. Self-discovery helps in tuing defects into opportunities through constant hardwork and commitment. Students must create value and contribute to the family, corporate and society as a whole. 

The rank holders from MBA and MCA through PGCET who joined SJEC in this academic year were felicitated by the Chief Guest.

 Ms. Ananya Hebbar in her inaugural speech inspired the gathering by briefing on her experience. She emphasised the role of faculty as a guide and a mentor. She urged students to explore life beyond academics and build connections.

He welcomed all the new students to the college and encouraged them to try their level best to excel, not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities.

Participation of SJEC students at Pilikula Inoovation Hub Inauguration

A team of 6 faculty members and 60 students from SJEC participated in the Inauguration of Innovation Hub at Pilikula on March 7th 2024 from 9.30 AM till 4 pm.

Dr. Harivinod N, Associate Professor-CSE, Dr Rolvin DSilva, Associate Professor-ME. Mr Prashanth Kumar, Assistant Professor-ME, Mr. Shylesh, Assistant Professor-CSE, Mr. Radhakrishna, Assistant Professor-ECE and Dr. Vijay V S, Assistant Professor-ME participated as the judge for the project competition organized for the ATAL Tinkering Lab students of Udupi and DK districts.

24 students from first year participated in the keynote address and quiz competitions. 8 students from Automation and Robotics Club, 4 students from Team Aero, 4 students from Synergy club, two students from final year EC department and 18 students from first year (IDEA lab) exhibited several projects.

About 60 schools, 500 students, and officials from the state govement, DDPI and Visvesvaraya Technological Museum Bengaluru were present. The SJEC team got much appreciation from Mr. K.V. Rao, Director, and other officials from Pilikula Regional Science Centre for the support extended in volunteering and organizing the program.

 

Industrial visit to NIRMITHI KENDRA

On the 7th of March 2024, third-year Civil Engineering students along with their faculty supervisors, Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar Bhojaraju, Dr. Prakash K G, and Ms. Pranamya K, embarked on a transformative educational jouey to NIRMITHI KENDRA located in Surathkal. The primary objective of this visit was to delve deeply into the realm of cost-effective construction methods and the integration of precast members, aligning theoretical knowledge with practical applications. NIRMITHI KENDRA, renowned for its pioneering efforts in promoting sustainable building practices, provided an enriching platform for exploration and discovery. Throughout the visit, students actively participated in live demonstrations, witnessing firsthand the utilization of alteative construction techniques such as stabilized mud blocks and compressed stabilized earth blocks. Engaging with compelling case studies showcased the real-world applicability and success stories of these innovative methods. Moreover, the intricacies of precast member fabrication and their role in expediting construction processes were thoroughly examined, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize traditional building practices. Interactions with seasoned experts offered invaluable insights into haessing indigenous resources and fostering a culture of innovation to address pressing housing challenges while ensuring environmental sustainability. This immersive experience not only expanded students' knowledge horizons but also ignited a passion for embracing eco-friendly practices and pioneering change within the field of Civil Engineering, thereby equipping them with the tools and inspiration needed to become future leaders in sustainable construction.

 

Annual Athletic Meet “Go For Gold – 2024”

The Department of Physical Education along with Wellness & Sports Group of St Joseph Engineering College Vamanjoor. Mangaluru organized Annual Athletic Meet GO FOR GOLD - 2024 on 6 March 2024 at SJEC college grounds. Athletics. coach Mr Bhakshith Salian was the Chief Guest. The programme was presided over by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director - SJEC. 

The sports day commenced with the beautiful march past by the students to the beats of Nithyadar High School Permannur, band. More than 2700 students participated in the march past class-wise, dressed in their colourful class jerseys. 

The college choir group led the invocation. Ms Florence Nishmitha Chair Person Wellness & Sports Group -SJEC introduced the Chief Guest and welcomed the dignitaries, guests, and students. The Chief Guest hoisted the College Flag. Followed by the torch ceremony. The torch was handed over to the Chief Guest to declare the meet open. As a mark of celebration, pigeons were released by the dignitaries. 

Addressing the gathering Mr Bhakshith Salian the chief guest of the program urged students to choose sports for fitness purpose, as it will be very helpful from the health perspective. He gave insights about Khelo India athletes and motivate the students to activity participate in Go for Gold 2024.

Ms Priya Miranda Sports Advisor proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Rachana Crasta, Department of Mathematics and Mr Joel D'Mello, Department of Mechanical Engineering compered the inaugural programme. 

The inaugural was followed by a series of Athletic events Flash Drill and Tug of war throughout the day that witnessed the active participation of both students as well as staff. The meet culminated with Valedictory involving prize distribution. 

Dr Rio D'Souza Principal was the Chief guest for the closing ceremony of the meet. Dr Rio D'Souza the Chief Guest congratulated the students for their active participation in the event.

Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Physical Education Director proposed the Vote of thanks The Prize list was announced by Mr Chithranjan, Sports advisor and the prizes were distributed by the dignitaries. The college flag was lowered and the meet was declared closed by the chief guest and the flag was handed over to the Director. The meet concluded with the National Anthem. In all, the Annual Athletic Meet, GO FOR GOLD -2024 was a grand success.

 

MBA: Genesis Inauguration and Fresher’s Day

The Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangalore inaugurated Genesis, a forum of MBA students, and celebrated Fresher's day 'Aarambh' on 5th March 2024 at Kalam Auditorium, AB II. The program began with the prayer song lead by the MBA choir.

CA Nagabhushan Pai, Chief Guest, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal SJEC, Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director-SJEC, Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean-MBA, Ms Acharya Chitralekha J, Faculty Coordinator, Mr Prajwal  and  Mr Hrithik Chand, Student Coordinators were present for the program.

Mr Prajwal S K, Student Coordinator-Genesis welcomed the gathering. Genesis, a forum of MBA students, was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by all the dignitaries. CA Nagabhushan Pai was the Chief Guest for the program. He emphasized on imagination that we need to cultivate which can be realized if worked hard. CA Pai also highlighted on developing skills through this MBA course and apply this skill in future to solve the business problems in future.   Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC was the Guest of Honour for the program. Dr Rio D'Souza encouraged students to take initiative to be the leaders and emphasized on active participation in Genesis Activities. Dr Rio D'Souza also emphasized on various avenues that are available in the campus and to make most of it.

Rev Fr. Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, the President of the program welcomed all the new students to the college and encouraged them to try their level best to excel in their academics as well as association activities. He emphasized to not only engage in academic activities but also use this knowledge to demonstrate skills in various extracurricular activities.

Mr Hrithik Chand, Student Coordinator-Genesis rendered the vote of thanks. Ms Mehak and Ms Yashika, Students-II yr. MBA compeered the event. The formal function was followed by informal program including various cultural programs and games for the students.

 

Converse Sphere-2024: A Panel Discussion on Changing Role of Management in AI Era

The Department of Business Administration, in collaboration with the SJEC-NIPM Student Chapter, successfully organized Converse Sphere-2024, a panel discussion focusing on the changing role of management in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). The event took place on the 4th of March 2024, and it provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of management practices amidst rapid technological advancements. The panel for the same included eminent personalities like Mr. Sandeep SP, HR Head, Pratt and Whitney India Business and Dr. Ronald Sequeira, Executive Director, VRA Solutions. 

The panel discussion delved into various facets of how AI is reshaping traditional management roles and practices. Mr. Sandeep SP, with his extensive experience in human resources management, emphasized the need for organizations to adopt AI-driven solutions to streamline HR processes while maintaining the human touch in employee relations. He highlighted the importance of leveraging AI for talent acquisition, performance management, and employee engagement.

Dr. Ronald Sequeira, as an expert in executive leadership and organizational development, shed light on the strategic implications of AI integration in businesses. He discussed how AI technologies are revolutionizing decision-making processes, enabling data-driven insights for effective leadership and organizational growth. Dr. Sequeira also addressed conces regarding the ethical implications of AI deployment in management practices and stressed the importance of responsible AI goveance.

The moderator, Mr. Roopesh, facilitated the discussion, encouraging interactive exchanges between the panellists and the audience. He guided the conversation towards exploring practical strategies for managers to adapt to the AI era, emphasizing continuous leaing and upskilling to haess the potential of AI technologies effectively.

Converse Sphere-2024 provided a platform for insightful discussions on the transformative impact of AI on management roles and practices. The panellists emphasized the need for proactive adaptation to technological advancements while upholding ethical principles in AI integration. The event concluded with a renewed understanding of the evolving role of managers in leveraging AI for organizational excellence. Dr Prakash Pinto, Professor and Dean of Department of Business Administration, Mr Rakesh T Lobo, HR Manager, St Jospeh Engineering College and Executive Member NIPM Mangalore Chapter and Mr Ronald Mascarenhas, Former HR Syngene Inteational Ltd were present on the occasion. Overall, Converse Sphere-2024 proved to be a thought-provoking and enlightening experience, enriching the knowledge and perspectives of all participants on the evolving dynamics of management in the AI era.

 

National Science Day 2024

AICTE IDEA Lab in association with the Department of Chemistry observed National Science Day 2024 on Wednesday February 28 in the Kalam Auditorium to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian Physicist Sir C V Raman in 1928, which led to his Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The programme was conducted for the school students of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi district. The Event started with a Video Presentation about SJEC followed by the invocation and lamping of the light to officially inaugurate the Science Day Event. 

 

Mr. Karthik Attavar, CEO, Section Infin-8, in his chief guest address mentioned, "Science is all about asking the right questions and seeking answers. Ms Vedavathi Rao, Nodal Officer, Atal Tinkering Lab, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC graced the occasion as guests of honour 

Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director, SJEC, in his presidential address said "Science has become a very important element of our life.” Rev.Fr. Kenneth Rayner Crasta, Assistant Director, SJEC, Dr K Jyothi, HOD, Chemistry Department, HR Manager, Rakesh Lobo, Deans & Heads of various departments were present on the occasion. 

 

28 teams with 250 students and 35 teachers across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi took part in the programme. Soon after the inaugural technical events: Rig-up, One piece, Panto craft challenge were conducted at three different venues followed by science events: Tatva, Chemstorm, MathArt Fusion. In the afteoon there was a project exhibition at Kalam Auditorium in which 32 projects were showcased from different schools.   The program ended with the prize distribution. Workshop on Insights from The Findings of a Short-Term Empirical Research Project Funded by ICSSR - Unveiling Artisan Empowerment Through Skill India Mission Under PMKVY 4.0

The workshop commenced with an invocation for blessings, as dignitaries and participants lit the ceremonial lamp. Dr Anjali Ganesh, Principal Investigator and Project Director, welcomed attendees and elucidated the workshop's objectives. The Chief Guest, Dr. Prakash Pinto, Dean of the Department of Master of Business Administration, emphasized the vital role of social sciences research in addressing societal challenges and uplifting communities. Mr Aflah Hassan VP, Handicrafts Promotion Officer, Dr Nithin NK, Project Officer, Heritage Village, Pilikula Development Authority, Mangaluru, Mr. Devraj K, Joint Director, Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India was among the guests of the workshop. Mr. Aflah Hassan V P, Handicrafts Promotion Officer, in his key note speech shared insights into the challenges faced by artisans. He emphasized the importance of social sciences research and its role in finding solutions to the problems faced by artisans. Mr. Roopesh, the Master of Ceremony, expressed gratitude to guests and participants, setting an optimistic tone for the workshop. 

The inauguration session was followed by the technical sessions where Dr Nithin explored challenges faced by artisans, including market support, product recognition, and mental health impact. He advocated for local product promotion, direct purchasing, and awareness-building. 

Dr. Anjali presented research findings on upskilling and reskilling of artisans, focusing on the Skill India Mission. Key findings included limited participation in PMKVY, lack of awareness, and unavailability of training centres, requiring enhanced promotional efforts. 

Mr. Aflah detailed schemes provided by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), covering socio-economic empowerment, skill development, marketing support, direct benefits to artisans, infrastructure development, and research and development. 

Artisans exhibited their creations, showcasing the rich diversity of their craft. The participants and visitors appreciated the artifacts, reinforcing the significance of preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship. The workshop concluded with a valedictory program, where participants received certificates for their active involvement. The event fostered knowledge exchange, highlighted challenges, and provided valuable insights into supporting artisans for sustainable development.

The workshop enhanced the understanding of the challenges and opportunities in skill development programs for artisans. It deliberated on how PMKVY should implemented effectively across all the clusters to benefit the varied clusters of artisans. Actionable recommendations to improve the effectiveness, accessibility, and sustainability of skill development initiatives under PMKVY 4.0 were suggested.  A platform was established for continued dialogue and exchange of ideas to support the skill development endeavours of the artisan community.

 

Unveiling Artisan Empowerment through Skill India Mission under PMKVY 4.0

On the 27th of February 2024, a workshop was held by St Joseph Engineering College in association with the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research based on the findings of the research "Upskilling and Reskilling of Artisans in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada Districts with respect to Skill India Mission of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0” led by Dr. Anjali Ganesh, Dr Sreeranga Bhat, Prof. Girish Madla, Dr. Binu K, Mr. Roopesh. The event, centered on the theme titled "Workshop on Insights from the findings of a short term empirical research project funded by ICSSR : Unveiling Artisan Empowerment through Skill India Mission under PMKVY 4.0,” brought together skilled craftsmen and women with the aim of aligning their expertise with the Skill India Mission under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0. The students of Department of MBA, St Joseph Engineering College were also the part of the workshop.

The day-long workshop comprised enlightening sessions conducted by experts in the field of skill development. These sessions delved into the latest findings from a comprehensive research project focusing on the artisan communities in the aforementioned districts. The objective was to understand the effectiveness, efficacy, identify skill gaps, opportunities and strategies for upskilling and reskilling, ultimately enhancing the artisans' development through the Skill India Mission.

An integral part of the workshop was the vibrant exhibition featuring a diverse array of artifacts and products crafted by the participating artisans. This exhibition not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage embedded in their creations but also served as a tangible representation of the potential of upskilled and reskilled artisans in contributing to economic growth.

One of the defining features of the exhibition was the vast diversity in craftsmanship on display. From delicate handmade jewelry, recycled clothed bags, to intricately carved coconut shell sculptures, the collection showcased the breadth and depth of artisanal talent. Visitors had the opportunity to witness the unique techniques and styles that have been passed down through generations, preserving cultural heritage and fostering a sense of continuity. Each exhibit told a story of tradition, innovation, and the fusion of cultural influences. The exhibition also provided an interactive platform for visitors to engage with artisans directly and this interactive element not only enhanced the educational aspect of the event but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the time-honored skills passed down through the generations. Many exhibits showcased a harmonious blend of traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics. The exhibition served as a reminder that, in the age of mass production, the unique stories woven into each artifact deserve recognition and protection. By supporting artisans, we not only sustain cultural heritage but also contribute to the flourishing of human creativity.

The workshop left an indelible impact on both participants and observers. It ignited discussions on the revitalization of traditional crafts, emphasizing the role of skilled artisans in the economic landscape. Moreover, the exhibition provided a marketplace for artisans to showcase their talents, fostering connections with potential buyers and collaborators.

The workshop served as a catalyst for change, aligning local craftsmanship with the broader vision of the Skill India Mission. By combining traditional skills with contemporary knowledge, the artisans in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada Districts are poised to contribute significantly to the cultural and economic fabric of the region.


This event stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and skill development, creating a promising future for the artisans and their crafts in the evolving landscape of the Indian creative economy.

 

Poster Presentation on “Coexistance In Nature With Harmony”

The Prodigi (Student Association of ECE) organized a Poster Presentation Competition for II-year ECE students on February 27th, 2024 in Communication Lab, III Floor, AB-I. The theme for the presentation was "Coexistence in Nature with Harmony” and the event was in support of the course Universal Human Values-II (22UHV37). The objective of this activity was to gain a deeper understanding of how humans can coexist with nature in a mutually beneficial and sustainable manner.


A total of 20 groups, each consisting of 5 members, actively participated in the event. The event judges were Mr Prasad S M, Assistant Professor from the Department of ECE and Ms Renuka Tantry, Assistant Professor from the Department of ICBS. Ms Bhuvaneshwari Bhat and her team bagged the first prize, while Mr Rusank and his team won the second prize. Dr Dayakshini, HOD-ECE, honored the prize winners. Ms. Vijaylakshmi H M, Assistant Professor of the ECE Dept, concluded the event by handing over the appreciation letter to the Judges, as a token of gratitude. Ms. Padmini Bhat and Ms. Shama B N coordinated the event.

 

The \'Intelli Hunt\' treasure hunt event

The 'Intelli Hunt' treasure hunt event, hosted by the Department of Intelligent Computing & Business Systems was designed to promote collaboration, critical thinking and creative problem solving skills among participants. 

The event spanned two days starting with a Qualifying round, on February 27th, 2024 followed by the other four rounds on February 29th, 2024. A total of thirty six teams with four members from each team took part in the opening round held from 4:00 - 5:00 pm on 27th February 2024. The venue consisted of three classrooms, 2405, 2406 and 2407 located on the 4th floor of the 2nd block of SJEC.

Later, twelve teams advanced for the further challenges which was held on February 29th from 1:15 pm to 4:30 pm. The first challenge was the PDF decoding round where these teams tackled puzzles and deciphered clues.

After the PDF decoding stage, six teams moved on to the poster round.Subsequent, to the poster round four teams progressed to the locations round. This round assessed the teams' capacity to decipher clues and navigate challenges at various locations, adding a physical dimension to the competition.

In the final round, the top two teams battled fiercely for the championship. Team Jack Sparrows with members Dion Joshua Lobo,Alroy Dsouza,Yashu Gowdafrom CSDS,1st year and Akanksha from CSE,1st year triumphed with exceptional teamwork and performance, they were awarded a cash prize of  ₹1200/- . Team Coronary Artery Disease with members Reevan Dmello, Alston Mendonca, Nicole Lasrado and Jenica Dsouza from AIML,2nd year  were the runners up and were awarded a cash prize of ₹800/-.

The "Intelli-Hunt" event fostered intellectual challenges allowing teams to demonstrate their abilities. The combined efforts of the participants, sponsors, and organizers ensured its success.

 

Talk on Practical Aspects of Direct Taxation

On 26 February 2024 the Department of Business Administration, SJEC organsied a talk on 'Practical Aspects of Direct Taxation' for MBA Students, SJEC in Spoorthi hall. The invited speaker was CA Dylan Rebello, 'Rebello & Associates, Mangaluru. CA Dylan Rebello began his session by highlighting the significance of taxation system in India. He explained the various heads of income and its practical implications. He elaborated the relevance of paying taxes in India. He distributed income tax retu form Sahaj ITR 1 among the students and explained each category in ITR Sahaj in detail. The talk was very well received by the II Year MBA students who attended the talk and cleared their queries. Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean-MBA and faculty members MBA were present on the occasion. Dr Shakila B, Associate Professor, MBA coordinated the session. Ms Komal II MBA compered the program.

 

RoboConnect: Exploring Robotics & PCB Integration

The Prodigi & Samarthya of ECE in association with SJEC AICTE IDEA lab Organised three days Student Development Programme (SDP) on "RoboConnect: Exploring Robotics & PCB Integration” from 26/02/2024 to 28/02/2024. The objectives of the workshop were to provide the participants an insight into Programming Basics, PCB Schematic Design using KiCAD, PCB etching and Design of BOT.

Total of 40 Students from II-year ECE registered and actively participated in this SDP. Dr Dayakshini HOD- ECE department welcomed the students and motivated them to have a passion towards building prototypes which is crucial for Innovation. Mr Lanish Abhishek Pinto, Mr Aashish Manuel Noronha, Mr Shravan V K, Ms Shama Shivanand, Ms Vaishnavi, Mr Shreyas S H, Mr Rickson D'Souza, Ms S Sindhushree, Mr Sahaj Shetty, Mr Rakshith and Ms Prerana P of III year ECE were the resource persons. Ms Jayalakshmi K P, Ms K Aarya Shri, Ms Priya Seema Miranda, Mr Glenson Toney, and Mr Aldrin Claytus Vaz Assistant Professor of ECE Department coordinated the event.

 

St Joseph Engineering College hosts its Eighteenth Graduation Ceremony

The Eighteenth Graduation Ceremony of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, was held on 24 February 2024 in the Open-Air Stage of the college. The ceremony witnessed the awarding of Graduation Certificates by the institution to the Class of 2023 comprising 531 Undergraduates (BE) and 200 Postgraduates (MBA, MCA and PhD).

Dr Neeraj Saxena, Pro Chancellor, JIS University, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and presented the degree certificates to the graduands. Ms.Irol Melisa Pinto, Cloud Solution Architect Manager, Microsoft, Bengaluru, was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop, Diocese of Mangalore and President of SJEC, presided over the ceremony. 

Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, welcomed the graduands from the Class of 2023 and dignitaries to the Graduation Ceremony. Dr Ramananda H S, Dean -Student Welfare, introduced the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour. 

Ms.Irol Melisa Pinto spoke about her own experiences and recalled her days as a student. She called upon the students to Align their sustainable development efforts to create a positive global impact and also haess the power of knowledge to achieve excellence. She insisted to pursue the goals with gratitude for those who influenced and  Stay humble, tackle challenges boldly, and courageously to make a difference.

Dr Neeraj Saxena, in his address, mentioned the importance of unbiased vision and perseverance underscored through anecdotes of historical figures such as Thomas Alva Edison and APJ Abdul Kalam. He spoke about the changes that have been witnessed due to Science & technology. He congratulated the graduates and emphasized the importance of education, especially during challenging times such as the COVID era. He encouraged the graduates to nurture their dreams, tackle challenges with determination and creativity, and contribute positively to society. 

Dr Rio D'Souza administered the graduation oath. Ms Akshatha, graduand from the Department of Business Administration and Mr Muhammed Kaif, graduand from the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, were the Valedictorians from the Class of 2023 and delivered the Valedictorian addresses sharing the reflections on the transformative jouey of education and gratitude was expressed towards all individuals who contributed to shaping the graduates into who they are today.

Scholastic achievers and Sports achievers were recognized and awarded by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore and President of SJEC. 

Delivering the Presidential Address, the Bishop said that In just two years, AI and ChatGPT have transformed our world, even becoming part of the SJEC syllabus. While AI offers speed, it lacks the humanity found in flesh and compassion. As graduates, let's prioritize humanity in our use of AI, ensuring our contributions propel our country forward. He also spoke about developing a skill wherever you are, the soft skills of building a relationship and being innovative, which is the soul of all education. 

Rev. Fr Kenneth Ryner Crasta, Assistant Director, Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal, Mr Rakesh Lobo, HR Manager and Ms Ramya Co-convenor were also present on this occasion. Mr Manjunath B, Convenor of the event offered the vote of thanks. Ms Preetha D'Souza and Mr Davor John D'Souza compered the program. SJEC wishes the Graduates from the Class of 2023 all success in their future endeavours.

 

EEE: OUTREACH PROGRAM

On 23rd of February 2024, the outreach program was conducted by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, in collaboration with the NDLI club, at Govement High School, Manchi Kolnadu, on February 23, 2024.

The outreach program was conducted with the participation of second-year students, two faculty members, and under the guidance of Ms. Susheela, the Headmistress of Govement High School. The objectives of the program were as follows:

  1. To provide career guidance to the students of High School.
  2. To showcase Electrical and Electronic components and projects.
  3. To organize quizzes, games, and interactive sessions for students belonging to rural backgrounds.

I am pleased to report that the program was executed successfully, and it received positive feedback from both the students and the school staff. Here is a detailed summary of the activities conducted during the outreach program:

1.Career Guidance Session:

The career guidance session aimed to enlighten the students about various career opportunities in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. 

2.Showcase of Electrical and Electronic Components and Projects:

The students set up interactive sessions showcasing various electrical and electronic components, gadgets, and projects. These exhibits allowed the students to lea about the practical applications of electrical engineering concepts and gain hands-on experience with different equipment and devices.

3.Quizzes, Games, and Interactive Sessions:

To engage the students and make leaing enjoyable, quizzes, games, and interactive sessions were organized throughout the day. These activities not only reinforced the concepts taught but also fostered a spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition among the students, Ms Divya K Pai, Ms. Chaithra Shetty, Assistant Professors, Dept. of EEE were the faculty in charge for this activity.

 

Industrial visit to KPTCL Kavoor substation

An Industrial visit to KPTCL, 220KV substation near Kavoor was organized to the 5th semester students by the EEE department on 22 February 2024.A total of 65 students visited the 220 KV / 132 KV / 33 KV / 11 KV substation along with faculty coordinators Ms Bharathi Rao and Mr Franco Menezes. KPTCL officials Mr Deepak and Mr Krishnanad Pai provided information about the layout of the substation. The objective of the visit was to have practical exposure on transmission and distribution of electrical power.

Students were informed that the incoming 220 KV duplex lines to this substation were supplied from KEMAR station, Karkala. The officials also explained in detail the working of Gang Operating Switch, lightning arresters, current transformers, circuit breakers, potential transformers and other equipments which form the main components of the substation. Students also visited the 11 KV substation in the same premises and were enlightened on the capacitor banks and the purpose of these banks for distribution. They also had a glance of the SCADA (control room) and the battery room. Single line diagram of the substation was studied and students had a discussion on how to identify the practical location of the equipment referring to the single line diagram. 

The industrial visit provided an enlightening experience to the students mainly on the practical aspects of transmission and distribution of electrical power. It also gave an insight on the sectors available for choosing career in Electrical Engineering.

 

Technical seminar on “VLSI DESIGN: Current & Future Perspectives”

The Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering has organized a technical seminar on "VLSI DESIGN: Current & Future Perspectives” for the second & third year ECE students on 20th February 2024 from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm in Prerana Hall. There were 250 participants in the talk. Ms Sampada Pachaury, Director - IUCEE Foundation was the resource person. 

The objective of the talk was to provide students with a deep understanding of the present state and potential future developments in VLSI design.

Ms Sampada Pachaury started the session by elaborating on her experience after working in the VLSI Industry and some of the technical aspects such as memory design, address decoding, chip design, etc...She enlightened the students with an overview of anticipated future trends in VLSI design and discussed emerging technologies, methodologies, and research directions that have the potential to shape the future of VLSI design. She suggested the students to equipped with strong fundamental knowledge and practical skills that can be applied in their work or research in VLSI design.  

The technical seminar was a fruitful session for the individuals interested in VLSI design, they gained insights into both current industry practices and the potential future directions of this dynamic field.

NIPM Student Chapter Installation Program

The Department of Business Administration at St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore, hosted the installation program for the National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM) Student Chapter on the 13th of February 2024. The event aimed to formally establish the NIPM Student Chapter at the institution and to induct its new members. The program saw a distinguished array of guests, faculty members, and students in attendance.

The program commenced with an invocation followed by the lighting of the lamp, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the advent of knowledge. Dr Prakash Pinto Dean of the department, delivered the welcome address, extending warm greetings to all present and emphasizing the significance of the occasion.

Mr. P. A. Jose, the esteemed Chief Guest, delivered an enlightening keynote address focusing on the evolving landscape of personnel management in the contemporary business environment. His insights into the role of effective human resource management in organizational success resonated strongly with the audience.

This was followed by an address from Mr. Steevan Pinto, Chairman NIPM Mangalore Chapter the Guest of Honor, who shared valuable experiences and encouraged the students to actively engage with the opportunities provided by the NIPM Student Chapter. Dr Rio Dsouza, the Principal SJEC delivered the presidential remark on the occasion explaining the importance of the initiatives. 

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Rakesh T Lobo HR Manager SJEC expressing gratitude to all the guests, faculty members, students, and organizers whose contributions were instrumental in making the program a memorable and impactful one. Ms Komal V was the master of ceremony for the event. Mr Roopesh convener of the program and the faculty members of the department were present on the occasion.

 

Workshop on Programmable Logic Controllers

The Workshop on Programmable Logic Controllers ( PLC) was organised for interested third year EEE students on 10 February 2024 by Mr Deepesh S K and   Mr Franco Menezes, Asst Professors, EEE Dept. The resource person for this workshop was Mr Shreekesh Udupa, Engineer, Rockwell Automation Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru. Mr Shreekesh Udupa is a EEE Alumnus from the batch of 2016. This handson session was based on the free Rockwell Automations Software (PLC software) which gave adequate knowledge and skills to students on ladder programming used in PLC's. The program was highly appreciated by all the studnets and staff present for the program.

 

EEE: Industrial Visit

An Industrial visit to Leksa Lighting Technologies Pvt Ltd, Mijar, Moodabidri Taluk, was organised by Mr Deepesh S K, Asst professor, EEE Dept and was coordinated by Ms Madhavi G and Mr Sathisha K, Asst Professors, EEE Dept. This program was organised under the banner of EELS Association for Third year EEE students on 08 February 2024. Leksa Lighting is a industry that designs and manufactures lights for different occasions. It has a complete design and tukey solutions for stage lighting and drapery systems as per inteational standards. It also manufactures lights for film and fiction shoots, for interior and exterior light designs and lights for fountains etc. The visit commenced with a presentation on Introduction of Leksa Lighting and their recent Indian and foreign projects. This was followed by the amazing light show using the lights that were manufactured by Leksa Lighting. The students were divided into two groups and were sent for the industry tour to different departments. The students were taken to the production line where all the components are assembled and made into a complete product before testing them. The testing process was shown where the lights are kept ON for several hours to check for faults and observe the current and power drawn by it. Also water resistance tests was done to check the lamp's conditions for fountains etc. The students also got insight information on the raw materials used in lighting industry and knowledge on lighting controllers. Students got bird's eye view of the surface mounted devices used in testing of lights. The students interacted with the employees of Leksa lighting in Q&A session. The visit was highly appreciated by all the students and faculty members.

 

A three-day Workshop on \"Bacterial Concrete- New Era for Construction Industry\"

A three-day Workshop on "Bacterial Concrete- New Era for Construction Industry' was hosted from 7th to 9th February 2024 for all the staff, students, and research scholars of the civil engineering department of SJEC from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM at Prerana Hall. The workshop was initiated by a prayer song. The head of the department, Professor Dr. B Yajnheswaran welcomed the resource person Dr. K Krishna Prasad. The floral welcome was done by Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar.  Later, by watering the plant, the workshop was inaugurated by the resource persons and conveners. Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar introduced the resource person to the gathering followed by talk of the resource person, Dr. K Krishna Prasad. The schedule of the workshop was announced by Dr. Nishitha D'Souza.

Later, with the completion of the formal function, the first session started with the topic of basic concepts of microbiology. The key takeaway of the moing session was bio cementation which is an ecological process based on the microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) mechanism, which results in the deposition of calcium carbonate. Further, the significance of carbon sequestration, self-healing concrete, and optimum utilization of the resources was discussed. The afteoon session was a hands-on session where we leaed about sterilization, media preparation, and bacteria cultures. The second day of the workshop started with a recap of the first day. After the technical talk, everyone was directed to assemble in the microbiology lab. The previous day cultured bacteria were seen under the microscope and the detailed procedure was explained to the resource person. 

On the third day, the session was led by Dr. B Yajnheswaran and Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar. The students responded well to the resource person. Dr. Nishitha and Dr. Prakash along with all the faculty coordinators, and student volunteers coordinated well for the successful completion of the workshop. Finally, the session was concluded with the facilitation of the resource person by the head of the department. The workshop was concluded by Dr. Prakash by delivering a Vote of Thanks.

 

Industrial Visit to Varahi Hydel Power Station and Shyamili Hydel Power Station

Students from the Department of Civil Engineering visited Varahi Hydel Power Station and Shyamili Hydel Power Station as a part of industrial visit on 01 February 2024. The visit was intended to make students lea about the basic concepts of Fluid Mechanics and other aspects related to the same. A total of 36 students from the third semester participated in this visit. Dr. Nishitha J D'souza and Mr. Rohith P. Veigas. Assistant professors from the Civil Department Coordinated this visit.

 

Orientation Program for MCA 2023-25 Batch

The orientation program for the newly admitted MCA students was organized from 29th January 2024 to 31st January 2024 for the 2023-2025 Batch. The main objective of the orientation was to assist the students in developing an understanding of the department, and its teaching-leaing processes, and to familiarize them with facilities available on the campus. Distinguished resource persons from the college and industry participated in this program to enlighten the vision and mission of the department. The fresh batch of students actively participated in the event.

Dr. Hareesh B, esteemed Associate Professor and Head of the Department, warmly greeted the incoming students to the MCA Department. In his talk introduced the Department of MCA to the new batch of students. Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC delivered a lecture on Professional Approach to Life. 

Ms. Sumangala N, Assistant Professor spoke on outcome-based education and the graduate attributes used to assess student performance using the measurable course outcomes. She briefed me about the semester-end examination and the eligibility criteria for passing, the inteal evaluation system, and the evaluation methods followed in the Department.

Ms. Nisha Shriyaan, Associate Lead - Full Stack, Microland Limited Alumnus 2013-17 Batch During her presentation, she shed light on the pivotal role of ethics and work culture within industries, drawing from her own extensive experience and expertise. Ms. Shriyaan provided invaluable insights into the ethical frameworks and workplace dynamics that contribute to a transformative and sustainable organizational culture. Her discourse not only inspired but also guided attendees toward fostering environments of integrity, collaboration, and excellence within their respective professional spheres.

Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Physical Education Director of the Institution addressed the students about the facilities of the Physical Education Department. She also briefed them about the rules and regulations to be followed to avail the sports facilities. 

Dr. Sudheer M, Dean of Academics of the college presented the complete Academic Regulations and MCA Curriculum Structure. He highlighted the curriculum structure, credit system, and also very importantly the academic evaluation plan in the presentation. 

Mr. Sunith Kumar T, Assistant Professor, shared invaluable guidance on navigating the enrolment and registration process for MOOC courses on Coursera, enlightening students on the seamless procedures to access a wealth of knowledge and skills online. Additionally, he shed light on the comprehensive resources and amenities offered at the Central Computer Centre(CCC).

Dr. Ramananda H S, Dean of Student Welfare, explained the importance of the mentoring process. He spoke about the facilities available in the college for student grievances. He also highlighted the basic academic and other rules of the college and requested students to follow them accordingly.

Ms. Preetha Aroza, the college counsellor, spoke about counseling and its importance in real life. She presented the counseling facilities available in the college for students to use this facility whenever required. She spoke on the activities conducted under Jagruthi committee.

Ms Priyanka Kamath, PrimeSophic Technologies, Mangalur, through her insightful presentation, she provided attendees with practical strategies and techniques to enhance their communication, interpersonal, and presentation abilities, while also offering valuable guidance on structuring compelling resumes that effectively showcase their talents and experiences.

Mr. Tharun S, the Co-Founder of Headway Technologies based in Mangaluru, conducted an insightful session focusing on the importance of hobbies both cultivated and developed during one's college years. He encouraged students to explore their passions and interests, emphasizing the significance of nurturing hobbies as a means of personal growth and skill enhancement. Furthermore, Mr. Tharun urged students to delve into freelancing opportunities, highlighting how such endeavors can serve as valuable platforms for honing technical skills and gaining practical experience outside the traditional classroom setting. His guidance aimed to inspire students to actively engage in self-directed leaing and pursue diverse avenues for professional development. 

Dr. Purushotham Chippar, Vice Principal of SJEC, led an enlightening session on the crucial topics of Research and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Drawing upon his wealth of expertise, Dr. Chippar provided valuable insights into the realm of research methodologies, highlighting the importance of innovation and scholarly inquiry in academia. Additionally, he delved into the intricacies of Intellectual Property Rights, empowering participants with knowledge on safeguarding their original ideas and creations. Through his comprehensive session, Dr. Chippar inspired a deeper understanding and appreciation for research and IPR among the attendees, fostering a culture of academic excellence and innovation within the institution.

Dr Felcy D' Souza, Librarian gave an orientation on resources, services, and facilities offered by the Central Library. She also familiarized the functional divisions of the library membership, timings, library online catalog, and digital library. She also demonstrated other e-resources offered by SJEC.

Mr Gururaja S, Assistant Professor gave a session on the Technocrats Student Association of MCA Department. He also briefed about the activities and events conducted under the Technocrats and Library facility of the Department.

 

Orientation Program for MBA 2023-25 Batch

The Department of Business Administration, SJEC had organized Orientation Program for 2023-25 Batch of MBA from 29th January to 2nd February 2024. The main objective of the orientation was to assist the students to develop an understanding of Management Education, its teaching-leaing processes, and to familiarize them with facilities available in the campus, action plans, skill sets expected from them etc. The orientation program covered varied topics which were taken up by inteal faculty members and exteal experts. 

The Orientation Program began with welcome by Dr Babitha Rohit, Associate Professor, MBA. She briefed the participants about the significance of organising the Orientation Program.  She took up a session on MBA @SJEC. The Dean MBA, Dr Prakash Pinto in his talk introduced the Department of MBA to the new batch of students. Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC delivered a lecture on Professional Approach to Life.

Dr Sudheer M, Professor & Dean-Academics provided details about Academic Regulations and MBA Curriculum Structure and Outcome Based Education at SJEC. Dr Anjali Ganesh, Professor, MBA took up a session on Team Building & Leadership.

Prof  Bharathi Shevgoor, Soft Skills Trainer & Editor Tarjani Communications Pvt Ltd,  Mangalore  conducted a session on Self Confidence as a key to Success. Mr Gaurav Kamath Co-Founder, CEO, and Business Head of Micro Degree, Mangalore briefed the students about corporate career planning. Prof Ronald Pinto, Director, at Institute for Individual Development, Mangalore spoke about the industry expectations from MBA graduates. Mr Kevin Rebello, Alumnus, 2012-14 Batch interacted with the new batch of MBA and narrated his corporate jouey. Prof Glenson Toney, Asst Prof  EC Department & Training Coordinator, SJEC spoke on Placement Training Essentials

Various skill building activities were conducted by Mr Ananth Bhat & Ms Deepthi Dinesh Assistant Professors-MBA during the orientation program. The students exhibited active participation and expressed their contentment over the orientation program.

 

Republic Day Celebration 2024

Republic Day is a day that is imperative to each Indian citizen because it denotes the day when India became democratic and truly independent. 

The Republic Day of our Nation was celebrated with pomp and show, zeal and spirit in SJEC at 8:30 am in the Basketball Court. Dr Felcy D'Souza Librarian SJEC graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza Director - SJEC, Rev. Fr Kenneth Rayner Crasta Asst Director - SJEC, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal - SJEC, Dr Purushothama Chippar Vice Principal - SJEC and Dr Ramananda HS -Dean SW were the other dignitaries present for the occasion.

The highlight of the day was the presence of SJEC NCC Naval and Air Wing Cadets. 

The dignitaries were escorted to the flag post by PO cadet Lalitha & Leading Cadet Anwaya from NCC Naval Wing  and Cadet Jairam along with  Cadet  Jaison from NCC Air Wing.

As per tradition, the Chief Guest unfurled the National Flag. Parade Commander, Parade Commander, Cadet Captian Pramathesh

of SJEC Naval Wing led the gathering in saluting the National Flag and rendering the National Anthem.

Parade Commander, Parade Commander, Cadet Captian Pramathesh of SJEC Naval Wing requested the Chief Guest to carry out the inspection of the SJEC NCC Troops. The Chief Guest and the dignitaries were escorted by the Cadets for the Troop inspection. 

Then with due permission from the Chief Guest, the troops with pride and enthusiasm gave the Guard of Honour led by the parade commanders of SJEC Naval and Air Wing. 

The presence of patriotism was raised by beautiful patriotic songs from the SJEC Crescendo. Followed by the exceptional skills in the sophisticated art of silent drill by the NCC cadets.

The Chief Guest's address during the Republic Day Celebration at SJEC served as a source of inspiration for all present. Her insightful remarks resonated with the audience, motivating them to strive for excellence, uphold democratic values, and contribute meaningfully to the nation's progress. The event concluded on a patriotic note, reaffirming the commitment of the college community towards building a strong and prosperous India.

The address was followed by the vote of thanks and distribution of sweets. The function was compered by Alva Shwetha, IV Year Computer Science Engineering.

 

Orientation Programme for New Faculties

The department of EEE in association with Quality & Goveance Group (QGG) And Inteal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), SJEC organized an orientation programme for new faculty memebers on 19 January 2024 in Room No 1124, First floor, AB-1. The programme was initiated by a welcome note delivered by Ms Himani Kishan Raj,Assistant Professor, EEE dept. 

The first session was about a brief introduction to St Joseph Engineering College. This session was delivered by Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash DSouza, Director, SJEC. Second session was about a comprehensive review of outcome based education- necessity, concepts, leaing styles and active leaing strategies and was delivered by Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal, SJEC. After the tea break, the session was on research at SJEC which was delivered by Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal. Then Dr Pavana Kumara B, Head IQAC explained about PO, PSO, Course Assessment, Programme Assessment and attainment calculations. 

The post-lunch sessions consisted of hands-on sessions on "creating LMS, personal and course website” delivered by Dr Hareesha B & Dr Vijay V S. The session on HR functions at SJEC was delivered by Mr Rakesh Lobo, HR Manager, SJEC.  The last session of the day was delivered by Dr Felcy D'Souza, Librarian on Library Orientation at SJEC. 

All the sessions of the day were appreciated by the participating faculty members and motivated them for future endeavors.

 

Awareness talk on Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) at Work Place

On 16 January 2024 College Inteal Complaint Committee (CICC) in association with Jagruti, SJEC organsied an awareness talk on Prevention on Sexual Harassment (PoSH) at the workplace for the Non-teaching staff of SJEC in Spoorthi hall. The invited speaker was Mr Nikesh Shetty, Advocate Mangalore.   Mr Nikesh Shetty enlightened the need of the Posh Act in the workplace. He explained various laws associated with sexual acts in the constitution. After elaborating on the PoSH Act's various definitions, he discussed the Act's Dos and Don'ts, methods for preventing gender-based misconduct, and the Act's scope. Notably, he detailed the complaint mechanism, enquiry process, timelines, and highlighted the functions of the College Inteal Complaints Committee (CICC). He encouraged women employees to become aware of their right provided to them through this Act. The talk was very well received by the non-teaching staff who attended the talk in large numbers. Rev Fr Kenneth Crasta Assistant Director, SJEC, Mr Rakesh Lobo HR Manager, Dr Shakila B, Chairperson-CICC & Ms Salma Shabnam, Coordinator 'Jagruti' were present on the occasion. Ms Ramya, M, Assistant Prof Mechanical Department compered the program.

 

workshop on UI/UX

The workshop on UI/UX was conducted on 12th January 2024 from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm in the Webinar Hall. There were about 31 teams consisting of 3 members each, making a total of 93 participants, along with the HOD of the ICBS Department, Dr. Shreenath Acharya, Student Association (NEXUS) Staff Coordinator Ms Pratibha G Gaonkar and office bearers of the NEXUS. The Resource persons for the workshop were students of third year of ICBS (Charishma Shivani, Chaitanya K and Ashbu Simon Noronha, 3rd year CSBS , Malcolm Joshua Monteiro, 3rd year AIML). Before the session Dr. Shreenath Acharya, HOD of ICBS Department addressed and motivated the students. 

The session began with the introduction on UI/UX by Charishma Shivani, 3rd year CSBS after which Malcolm Joshua Monteiro, 3rd year AIML took up Wireframe Designing using MIRO. Later the session was conducted by Chaitanya K and Ashbu Simon Noronha,3rd year CSBS by taking up high fidelity designing using Figma. The students were dispersed at 1.00 pm for lunch and were asked to be back at 2.00pm for the UI Battle.

In the afteoon, a problem statement was given and the teams were asked to create a user interface. The time frame given to them was from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. The judges for the battle were Ms. Farah Anjum and Ms. Renuka Tantry, Asst. Professors of ICBS Department. Letter of appreciation was handed over to the judges and to the resource persons by Ms. Pratibha Gaonkar.

The first Prize was bagged by team EXODUS with the following members Libin George Siby from CSBS 2nd year, Nikhil and Isaiah Titus Kappan from AIML 2nd year. They were given a cash prize of ₹750/- and e-certificates. The second place was won by team CRYSTA with the following members Thanya R, Kavyashree K and Sushmitha of CSBS 3rd year. They were given a cash prize of ₹500/-and e-certificates. All the participants were provided with e-certifications for their participation in the Workshop.

 

Industry Interaction Session on Personal Finance by Salman Quairashi, Head of Sales at Zerodha

On January 11, 2024, the Department of Business Administration students at St Joseph Engineering College had an Industry Institute Interaction session on personal finance, featuring Salman Quairashi, the Head of Sales at Zerodha. The session aimed to impart essential knowledge on personal finance and investment strategies to equip future business leaders with practical insights.

Salman Quairashi initiated the session by providing a comprehensive introduction to personal finance, stressing the significance of financial literacy in the professional jouey of MBA graduates. With clarity and enthusiasm, he navigated through fundamental concepts such as budgeting, savings, and investment planning, setting the stage for a deeper exploration of the topic. A pivotal focus of the session was on investment strategies, where Mr. Quairashi leveraged his expertise to elucidate various investment avenues. Students gained valuable insights into mutual funds, stocks, and other financial instruments, with a specific emphasis on online trading. The practical perspectives the speaker shared demystified the stock market's intricacies, providing students with a tangible understanding of the subject matter.

Salman Quairashi underscored the importance of creating a well-balanced investment portfolio to mitigate risks and achieve sustainable financial growth. The discussion on these principles resonated well with the audience, offering a strategic approach to financial planning. The session also addressed emerging trends in personal finance, shedding light on how innovations such as fintech applications are reshaping the financial landscape. 

Mr. Quairashi's insightful responses enhanced the leaing experience, providing a real-world context to the theoretical knowledge imparted during their MBA program. Students appreciated the session's relevance and Salman Quairashi's ability to simplify complex financial concepts. The practical insights shared during the interaction were deemed directly applicable to their future roles in business management, showcasing the session's success in achieving its educational objectives.

In conclusion, the Industry Institute Interaction session on Personal Finance by Salman Quairashi proved to be an enriching experience for MBA students. The insights shared are anticipated to contribute significantly to their financial acumen and decision-making skills as they embark on their professional joueys. Dr Prakash Pinto, Professor and Dean of the Department of Business Administration St Joseph Engineering College Presented a memento to the speaker and Mr Roopesh, Convener of the program proposed the vote of thanks.

 

Inauguration of the Civil Engineering Students Association - NIRMAN

The inauguration of the NIRMAN Civil Engineering Students Association activities for 2024 took place at the Kalam Auditorium on January 6, 2024, with Chief Guest Mr. Ramananda H S, Dean Students Welfare, President of the function Dr. Yajnheswaran B, HOD Civil Department.  

The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp, symbolizing the commencement of a new academic year. The induction of new office bearers featured Mr. Muhammad Rafid as President, Mr. Manvith D as Secretary, Mr. Darshan K as Joint Secretary, and Mr. Mohammed Fuzail Ummar as Treasurer. 

Following the inauguration, a series of technical events provided students with opportunities to showcase their engineering skills. In the afteoon, the Branch Entry and cultural events allowed students to express their creativity and cultural diversity, fostering camaraderie. The NIRMAN Civil Engineering Students Association aims to make 2024 a year filled with leaing, collaboration, and excellence in the field of civil engineering, as demonstrated by the successful inauguration event and Mr. Chitharanjan M, Assistant Professor coordinated this event.

 

Inauguration of Electrical & Electronics Student Association (EELS) for the Academic Year 2023-24

The Inauguration of Electrical & Electronics Student Association (EELS) for the Academic Year 2023-24 was held on 04 January 2024 at 10.00 am in Fr Fred Seminar Hall. Mr Rathnakar Bhat, CEO, KarMic Design Pvt. Ltd graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Dr. Sanath Saralaya, Head of the Department , Ms MadhaviGatty, Staff Coordinator and EELS office bearers were the other dignitaries on the dais.  The programme began with a prayer song, followed by the auspicious traditional lamp lighting ceremony to formally inaugurate the Association activities. Dr Sanath Saralaya welcomed the gathering& introduced the distinguished Chief Guest. A video presentation of EELS association activities held during the academic year 2022-23 was done. Mr Koushik Bhat, president of EELS proposed the association activities for the academic year 2023-24. The meritorious students were felicitated with certificate presented by the chief guest Mr Rathnakar Bhat.  The formal event concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Ms Madhavi Gatty, Staff Coordinator, EELS. The formal inaugural ceremony was followed by a motivational talk on "career opportunities in semiconductor industries” by the Chief Guest. The talk was highly appreciated by all the students and faculty members present. The honourable Chief Guest of the day was felicitated with a memento presented by the Head of the Department. Ms Renita Pinto, Final year student compered the programme. 

The inaugural function of EELs was followed by a branch entry program in the post lunch session on 04 January 2024 in the Kalam Auditorium. The third semester students of EEE branch welcomed cordially by the EEE faculty and students from third and final year. The program constituted exciting games for third semester students followed by a cultural program hosted by third and final year students. This program was liked by all the students and faculty members.  


 

Lecture on “Development of Scientific Temper Under Article 51 AH-Constitution of India”

Department of EEE in association EELs association organized a Lecture on "Development of Scientific Temper under Article 51 AH-Constitution of India” for the IInd & IIIrd year EEE students on 21st December 2023 from 2:00 -5:00pm. The resource person for the session was Professor Narendra Nayak, Former professor-KMC Mangaluru, President of Indian Rationalist Thinking Associations.

Professor Narendra Nayak stressed the importance of Development of scientific temper among the students. He urged the students to develop logical & critical reasoning. He stressed on the importance to develop the habit of questioning on the facts told or already known to you. Prof. Nayak also demonstrated few facts by giving live demonstration to the students. 

The session left behind a very deep impact on the students as it made students to rethink on the many of the facts which was shown by live demonstration to the students.

 

Expert Talk on ABET Accreditation/Managing Students’ Projects

The SJEC Teaching Leaing Center - SANJOSH organized an Expert Talk on ABET Accreditation/Managing Students' Projects on December 20, 2023 at 11:30 am in Spoorthi Hall, 7th  Floor  Academic Block III. The Resource Person for the talk was Dr Raju Dandu, Professor, Kansas State University, USA. Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal, introduced the Resource Person and welcomed the audience. 

The talk was open to the faculty of SJEC. Dr Raju Dandu emphasized the significance of ABET Accreditation, elucidating the process and criteria involved in accreditation. The resource person also discussed the necessity of continuous quality improvement and provided insights into the role of becoming a program evaluator.

The insights provided by the resource person were well-received by the participants. Dr. Rio D'Souza, Principal of SJEC, felicitated the resource person. The session was emceed by Mr. Roopesh, Assistant Professor from the Department of Business Administration. Dr Binu K G, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering Coordinated the overall programme.

 

Inauguration of the Student Association - Nexus

The Department of Intelligent Computing and Business Systems conducted the inauguration of the Student Association-Nexus (2023-2024)on 20-12-2023 in Kalam Auditorium at 2:15p.m. This marked a momentous occasion, bringing together students, faculty, and esteemed guests. The chief guest for the program was Dr Kevin Joy Dsouza, Cloud Leader at Niveus Solutions, Mangalore. Along with the chief guest, HOD of ICBS Department, Dr. Shreenath Acharya and the faculty co-ordinator Ms. Pratibha Gaonkar were escorted onto the dais by President Annalisa D'Silva, Vice President Charishma Shivani, Secretary Glenna D'Souza, Treasurer Shreyas and Joint Secretary Joywin Neil Lasrado, the office bearers of the student association. The program commenced with the soulful invocation, creating a serene ambiance for the proceedings. Vice President Charishma Shivani welcomed the attendees.After the welcome address, the formal inauguration was done by lighting of the lamp.

After the inaugural of the association, Ms Annalisa presented a comprehensive roadmap for the association. She briefed about the plans for the academic year 2023-24 such as conducting workshops on UI/UX, Codeathon, Intellihunt and much more. Then, DrShreenath Acharya, the Head of the Department, graced the occasion with an inspiring address, highlighting the significance of student associations in fostering holistic development. This was followed by the felicitation of the top two meritorious students of 4th, 3rd and 2nd year, who have excelled in their 3rd,2nd and 1st year examinations respectively. The program was followed with a speech by the Chief Guest, Dr Kevin Joy D'Souza, Cloud Leader at Niveus Solutions, Mangalore, captivated the audience with his insightful address. The chief guest was presented with a memento as a token of gratitude.Finally, the vote of thanks was given by Ms Glenna D'Souza expressed gratitude to all participants, organizers, and sponsors who made the event a success. The function concluded with the college anthem, instilling a sense of pride and unity among all.After the formal program, the technical talk was delivered by the Resource person, Dr Kevin Joy D'Souza extended the leaing beyond the classroom, offering students a glimpse into the rapidly evolving world of AI and its relevance . The session concluded at 4:00p.m.There were about 390 students along with 22 teaching and non-teaching faculties who attended this event.

The informal program for the 2nd year students was held on 21-12-2023, in Kalam Auditorium at 2:00 p.m. It unfolded as a dynamic tapestry of talent, camaraderie, and exuberance, creating lasting memories for everyone involved. The event commenced with a introductory dance performance by the 3rdyear seniors, setting the stage for an evening filled with excitement. 

The highlight of the evening was the fiercely contested variety competition among the three sections - CSBS, AIML, and CSDS. The participants showcased their skills in a range of categories, leaving the audience in awe. 

Following the competition, the atmosphere was charged with energy as two engaging games unfolded, fostering friendly competition and collaboration among the junior participants.  

As the clock struck break time, participants and spectators alike enjoyed a well-deserved pause. Snacks were distributed, providing an opportunity for everyone to recharge and socialize.  

After the break, the enthusiasm continued with two more exciting games that kept everyone on their toes. The grand finale was a captivating dance performance by the 4th year seniors. The announcement of CSBS, as the winner of the variety competition brought the program to a triumphant close .Later, the DJ took over, tuing the floor into a pulsating dance party where students celebrated the success of the event. As the clock struck 4:45 pm, the echoes of laughter, cheers, and applause lingered in the air, marking the success of the Juniors' Branch Entry Informal Program.

Two Day Hands-on Session on “Data Analytics Using Python”

The Department of Intelligent Computing & Business Systems (ICBS) Department of St Joseph Engineering College organized a Two-day Hands-on Session on "Data Analytics Using Python” for students of CSBS, on 14 and 15 December, 2023 from 9:30am-4:00pm. A total of 60 participants enthusiastically participated in this workshop. The main guests for the workshop were Mr Chetan Adhikary, IT Analyst, Tata Consultancy Services, Bengaluru and Mr Praveen Chandra, Regional Head - Academic Interface Programme, TCSBangalore

This two-day workshop was opened with a welcome statement by our M.C Ms Charishma briefing about the TCS Resource personals (Chief Guests) Mr Chetan Adhikary and Mr Praveen Chandra, followed by offering a bouquet by Dr. Shreenath Acharya, HOD ICBS to express our gesture of honor and appreciation.

Mr Praveen Chandra gave the opening speech about TCS bridging the gap between technology for college students through their MoU. He also proposed different inteship opportunities offered by TCS for students at their organization.

The session aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to Python programming and hands-on experience in data analytics. The workshop spanned two days, with the first day dedicated to Python basics and the second day delving into practical data analytics applications. The topics covered in Day 1 are Overview of Python and its applications in data analytics, Setting up the Python development environment, Basics of Python syntax, variables, and data types, Participants engaged in coding exercises to reinforce Python basics and Building simple programs and gaining confidence in Python programming. The topics covered in day 2 are Understanding the significance of data analytics, Introduction to key Python libraries for data analytics, Loading and cleaning datasets using Pandas, Handling missing data and preparing data for analysis, Participants applied Python skills to analyze real-world datasets. And also there was Collaboration and problem-solving during the workshop which helped the students upskill their knowledge on python.

 The workshop ended with a vote of thanks and handing over of mementos to our esteemed guests. With a note of gratitude to all the participants and a group photo, this two-day hands on session came to a successful end.

It was an  interactive session where the resource person answered many queries raised by the participants. All participants showed their keen interest during the workshop and gained good leaing experience with better clarity of the topics covered. The session has got excellent feedback from the participants.

The entire workshop was co-ordinated by Ms Renuka Tantry, Assistant Professor and Ms Farha Anjum, Assistant Professor, Department of ICBS.

 

Inauguration of Prodigi Activities for the year 2023-24

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering Inaugurated Prodigi Activities 2023-24 and Samarthya Club on December 7, 2023 in Kalam Auditorium starting at 9:30 AM. The chief guest for the event was Dr. Shashidhar G Koolagudi, Professor, and Former Head of the Department of Computer Science at NITK Surathkal. Dr. Sudheer M, Dean Academics at SJEC, graced the event as the Guest of Honor.

Dr Dayakshini, HOD-ECE Department, welcomed  the Chief Guest and Introduced him to the august gathering.  Mr Prasad  S M, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE  briefed about the activities conducted under Prodigi for the academic year 2022-23. Dr Dayakshini congratulated the new office bearers of Prodigi and Samarthya club. Dr Shashidhar G Koolagudi and Dr Sudheer M felicitated the meritorious students who topped in their academic performance. Mr Rathan P A and Mr Leslie Rodrigues President of Prodigi and Samarthya club briefed about the activities planned for the academic year 2023-24.

The Resource Person, Dr. Shashidhar Koolgudi delivered technical talk for ECE students on Introduction to Artificial Intelligence. The session covered topics such as the impact of AI/ML, the overview of Machine Leaing, steps involved in the ML process, and practical applications.

Collage making competition

ChemAtom - SJEC Chemical Society of the Department of Chemistry conducted a Collage competition on 6th December, 2023 for the first year B.E students at the chemistry department, SJEC from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The theme for the competition was related to the topics in Chemistry and its applications.

ElectroLink - Path to Proficiency

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) conducted a  3-day bridge course titled "ElectroLink - Path to Proficiency" from November 27 to 29, 2023. The course aimed to enhance the understanding and skills of second-year ECE students. The program included theoretical sessions and hands-on training on various topics relevant to the ECE curriculum.

The primary objectives of the course were to:

  • To develop a foundational understanding of the key concepts and principles in network theory.
  • To acquire knowledge of various electronic components, their characteristics, and applications.

Day 1

The day commenced with an address by Dr. Dayakshini, Head of the Department - ECE. Subsequently, Session 1 on the Basics of Network Theory took place from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. This session, led by resource persons Dr. Roshan R Naik, Ms. Vijayalaxmi H M, and Mr. Radhakrishna, covered topics such as net resistance, capacitance, and inductance measurements, as well as KCL and KVL for simple DC circuits. The afteoon session from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM involved hands-on training in AC, NT, and DD Labs.

Day 2

The second day featured Session 2 on the Basics of Analog Circuits from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Led by Mr. Prasad S M, Mr. Aldrin C Vaz, and Ms. Vinitha Pasanha, this session explored the construction of MOSFETs, introduction to Operational Amplifiers, IC-741, characteristics of Ideal Opamps, various applications, and an introduction to IC-555 Timer. Following this, the afteoon continued with hands-on training in AC, NT, and DD Labs.

Day 3

The final day included Session 3 on the Basics of Digital Design from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Resource persons Ms. Reshma K J, Ms. Deepthi S R, and Ms. K Aarya Shri delved into topics such as binary representation, Boolean Algebra, Logic Gates, simplification techniques, and the designing of combinational and sequential logic circuits. The day they concluded with a hands-on session involving the implementation of logic gates, verification of De Morgan's theorems, and the implementation of SOP/POS expressions. Subsequently, the afteoon proceeded with practical, hands-on training sessions conducted in the AC, NT, and DD Labs.

The course successfully covered a range of topics, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for their academic and professional development in electronics and communication engineering. Ms Deepthi S R & Ms K Aarya Shri coordinated this bridge course.

 

One Day Workshop on Pipeline Design and Fittings

The NIRMAN Civil Engineering Students Association successfully organized a day workshop on "Pipeline Design and Fittings" in Prerana Hall on 25th November 2023. The event aimed to provide valuable insights into pipeline design and fittings, crucial aspects of civil engineering. The workshop witnessed active participation from both students and faculty members.

The workshop commenced with a technical talk by Mr. H D Chandrashekar, Senior Manager of Sales and Marketing at Supreme Ind Ltd, Bengaluru. covering essential aspects of pipeline design, materials, and fittings. The session delved into the latest industry trends, challenges, and innovations in pipeline technology. Participants gained valuable insights into the practical applications of theoretical concepts. Following the technical talk, Mr. Chandrashekar conducted a hands-on demonstration of various pipe fittings. The practical session allowed participants to witness the application of theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. The interactive demonstration facilitated a deeper understanding of the nuances involved in pipeline design and fittings. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the workshop's effectiveness in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Attendees appreciated the relevance of the content and the industry-oriented approach adopted during the workshop. Mr. Chitharanjan M and Mr. Ajeeth B Assistant Professors were   the coordinators of this Workshop.

 

POSTER PAINTING COMPETITION ON THE TOPIC “INNOVATIVE IDEAS IN THE FIELD OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY”

The Library & Leaing Group and the Department of ICBS in association with the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) organized a Poster painting competition on the topic "Innovative Ideas in the Field of Engineering and Technology for the students of first-year B.E. on 24th November 2023 in the Academic block 3 (3101) from 3 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. A total of 8 students registered online for the competition and out of eight students four had participated. 

The activity was judged by Dr Sofia Rego- Associate Professor, Department of CSE the Chairperson LLG, and Mrs Renuka Tantri, Assistant Professor, Department of ICBS.

Students actively participated in the poster painting competition. All participants showcased their knowledge about recent trends and technologies on the canvas beautifully.

Workshop on \"Modern Formwork and Scaffolding Technologies\"

Civil Engineering Students Association successfully organized a day workshop on "Mode Formwork and Scaffolding Technologies" in Prerana Hall on 21st November 2023. The event aimed to provide valuable insights into different types of formworks, innovation in the areas of mode formwork and scaffolding technologies. The workshop witnessed active participation from both students and faculty members.

The workshop commenced with a technical talk by Mr. Sandeep Verma, Director Formwork, Sharp Ply (India) Pvt Ltd., covering different types of formworks, materials involved and development in technologies in the field of formwork design. The session delved into the latest industry trends, challenges, and innovations in formwork technology. Participants gained valuable insights into the practical applications of theoretical concepts. Following the technical talk, Mr. Sandeep Verma conducted a practical demonstration in an Industrial visit to commercial complex of Marian Infrastructure in Manipal. The practical session allowed participants to witness the application of theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. The interactive demonstration facilitated a deeper understanding of the nuances involved in formwork design and scaffolding technologies. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the workshop's effectiveness in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Attendees appreciated the relevance of the content and the industry-oriented approach adopted during the workshop. Ms. Pranamya K and Mr. Sachin U Assistant Professors were the coordinators of this Workshop. 


 

ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION ON THE TOPIC “ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: A POTENTIAL ASSET OR A DANGER TO HUMANKIND”

The Library & Leaing Group and the Department of Mathematics in association with the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) organized an essay writing competition on the topic "Artificial Intelligence: A Potential Asset or a Danger to Humankind” for the students of first-year B.E. on 22 November 2023 in 3203 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A total of 24 students registered online for the competition and 19 participated. 

The evaluators for the event were Ms Teena James, Assistant Professor, Department of ICBS, and Ms Jithya K V, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science.
